After 34 seasons and counting, The Simpsons embodies many things. The longest running scripted series in the history of television began as an upstart, and grew to a Methuselah, with the wisdom of a dinosaur, and the prophetic voice of Nostradamus. Every other month, some news item or deleted tweet fulfills a prediction made by The Simpsons. It appears to follow what the kids in South Park knew decades ago: whenever something unexpected happens, The Simpsons already did it. They usually know because they were expecting it, don’t underestimate the studies of the writing team.
Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. Luckily, The Simpsons is constantly being rerun somewhere, reminding us even the most current events are old news in syndication. Most of the gags which have been interpreted as predictions are cases of The Simpsons pouring commentary on existing, if little known, events.

Did The Simpsons “predict” the OceanGate Titanic submersible tragedy?
The animated series has been surprisingly prophetic when it comes to past historical events, from the global pandemic and “invasion” of murder hornets to the election of President Donald Trump and Lady Gaga’s high-flying Super Bowl performance. It appears the show may have also “predicted” the disappearance of the OceanGate submersible, which lost contact Sunday while descending to the site of the Titanic wreckage with five on board.
Amid news of the OceanGate tragedy, a 2006 episode of The Simpsons, titled “Homer’s Paternity Coot,” resurfaced on social media, presenting striking similarities to current events. In the episode, Homer Simpson embarks on a deep-sea expedition to search for long-lost treasure with his biological father in tiny submersibles. After searching for a while, they come across an abandoned ship site that’s filled with treasure.
But soon, things get hairy for the...

After #JimmyFallonIsDead trended Tuesday on Twitter, the late-night host asked Twitter owner Elon Musk directly if he could “fix it.” Musk’s brief response on Wednesday morning: “Fix what?”

While several people took the hashtag at face value and thought Fallon was really dead, it quickly became a meme with photos of people who were definitely not the former “SNL” star, including fellow late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel and James Corden.

When Yeardley Smith was asked to represent her show, The Simpsons, at a mural unveiling event in Springfield, Oregon in 2014, she declined.
“The joke is that I really will do anything for my show but I didn’t really want to do it,” said the iconic voice of Lisa Simpson. But after a bit of begging from producers and a confirmation that the appearance would include security detail, Smith, who had dealt with stalkers, changed her mind.
Meanwhile, when the captain of the Springfield Police Department surveyed a room full of detectives to volunteer for a special assignment, no hands shot in the air. “I looked around the room at the other detectives, including my twin brother. It was summertime and I thought, let these guys have time with their families since they all have children. I’m single and I don’t have any children,...

Creatives behind The Simpsons shared new details about Season 33 on Saturday, revealing that it will feature a musical premiere, an expanded “Treehouse of Horror” episode and more.
During a Comic-Con@Home panel teasing the new season, executive producer Matt Selman described premiere episode “The Star of the Backstage” as the “most musical episode we’ve ever done”—”like a Broadway musical of an episode with wall to wall music.”
The season’s first episode will feature an assortment of original songs. Actress Kristen Bell (Frozen) will handle singing for Marge, the Simpsons matriarch played by Julie Kavner.
EP Al Jean later announced that this year’s “Treehouse of Horror Xxxii” episode will feature five segments, rather than the traditional set of three, presenting one of the five to the virtual Comic-Con audience.

The Simpsons aired one of its most pointed parodies this past weekend, “Panic on the Streets of Springfield,” and the hits keep on coming. Animation Domination on Fox dropped “Everyone Is Horrid Except Me (And Possibly You),” the new music video by Quilloughby (with Lisa Simpson), which came out on The Snuff’s label, Total Despair Records.
The lyrics are inspired sub-genre satire. “Everyday I try to smile, but can’t help but frown, Every day I draw my bath and pray I will drown,” Quilloughby (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) sings, and heaven knows he’s miserable, now and forever. Listen and abandon hope.
The song captures the feel of the nihilistic depression rock of days past, and the episode caught the eye of the sardonic satiric subject.
The episode’s guest character, Quilloughby and his band The Snuffs, is a more-than-farcical sendup of Morrissey, lead vocalist and lyricist for the Smiths,...

The Simpsons recently struck a chord with former Smiths frontman Morrissey, whose manager Peter Katsis chewed out the long-running Fox animated series for “trying to capitalize on cheap controversy and expounding on vicious rumors.”
Late Sunday evening, Katsis shared a lengthy post on the singer’s official Facebook page responding to the show’s “Panic on the Streets of Springfield” episode, which aired on Sunday. It saw Lisa Simpson create an imaginary friend named Quilloughby, who leads the band The Snuffs. Voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, Quilloughby is a “depressed British singer from the 1980s” who may resemble the former frontman of The Smiths. While The Simpsons character may even look like the British rocker, the episode even features Morrissey-esque songs written by Flight of the Conchords‘ Bret McKenzie and Tim Long.

While “The Simpsons”’ parody of a “depressed British singer from the 1980s” — clearly styled at least partially on erstwhile Smiths frontman Morrissey — has gotten rave reviews in many quarters, the man himself is apparently less than thrilled. The singer was satirized as an imaginary friend of Lisa Simpson’s named Quilloughby, from a fictional band called the Snuffs, who, like Morrissey, was a vegan with a quiff a glum outlook.
The character was voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch; the episode was titled “Panic on the Streets of Springfield,” in reference to the group’s 1986 single, and it features many references to the singer (an Oscar Wilde poster) and the Smiths’ album artwork.
Morrissey has made multiple questionable comments about race over the course of his career, particularly in recent years, in which he has supported a right-wing British political group, called Chinese people a “subspecies” and mocked London mayor Sadiq Khan’s accent.

The Simpsons took on the 2020 presidential election and the past four years under President Donald Trump in the teaser for its upcoming “Treehouse of Horror” episode.
The teaser kicks off with Homer Simpson rushing to fill out his ballot. But before he can turn it in, he reaches an impasse.
“I know who I want for all the judges and propositions, but president – that’s a stumper. Can I write in Judge Judy?” he asks.
Before writing in the television personality, a mask-wearing Lisa Simpson steps into her indecisive father’s voting booth, hoping to inform his decision for president.
“Dad, by all that’s decent how could you forget all that’s happened in the last four years?” Lisa says, encouraging him to reflect.
After briefly thinking about the 2018 Oscars Envelopegate fiasco, Homer sees a credit-style list compiling most of President Donald Trump’s problematic moments, comments and actions...

The Simpsons Season 32 Episode 1
In The Simpsons’ season 32 premiere, “Undercover Burns,” the needs of the many are outweighed by the wants of the one. It begins on “take your kids to work day” at the Springfield Nuclear plant and the offspring which managed to make it out of the workers’ radioactively damaged reproductive systems are being culled for slave labor like inmates at a for-profit prison. This of course leads to the most intrepid isotot, Lisa Simpson, to expose the labor abuses for what they are: just another day at the plant. But it also leads to C. Montgomery Burns realizing he is not quite the beloved despot he pays his yes-men to say he is.
The episode gets its title from CBS’s Undercover Boss, which premiered after Super Bowl Xliv in 2010. In that show, executives put on overalls and pass as workers...

When director Lisa Donato came on board to helm “Gossamer Folds,” casting a trans actor to play the lead was imperative. “It was non-negotiable,” she says of her directorial debut.
Even more important was getting the framing and lighting right, and for that, Donato recruited her frequent collaborator and trans cinematographer Ava Benjamin Shorr to make the right choices when it came to “accurately depicting a trans person.”
“Gossamer Folds,” now screening at Outfest LA’s film festival, tells the story of a friendship between Gossamer, played by “Transparent’s” Alexandra Grey, and a young white boy named Tate (Jackson Robert Scott). But Tate’s transphobic father learns about Alexandra and forbids him from talking to his new friend. However, Tate defies his father’s orders to form a powerful friendship.

Solar Opposites Episode 6
The bulk of Solar Opposites’ plots draw from the simple, but richly adaptable framework of introducing a classic comedy trope into the aliens lives, but, because they’re aliens, the trope plays out in a bizarre sci-fi fashion that deviates drastically from the plot’s basis, typically culminating in the deaths of a whole lot of people.
In a way, it makes me think of Beavis and Butt-Head, a series which deserves more credit for completely subverting conventional TV comedy storytelling.Maybe this is kind of a funky comparison because Solar Opposites is still a heavily structured sitcom, while Beavis and Butt-Head is borderline structureless, but both of them defy sitcom expectations by virtue of their protagonists being unconventional factors in what might be otherwise conventional stories. Basically, Beavis and Butt-head are too stupid to embark on full character arcs and...

In the beginning of the series’ record-breaking run, many performers used pseudonyms in the credits, as voice acting on a cartoon was still looked down upon. Now appearing on “The Simpsons” is a point of pride, so much so that John Waters has a still of his character hanging up in his office. The show has evolved as well, and where it once used guest actors sparingly where they fit into the larger story, modern...

The Simpsons Season 31 Episode 10
D'oh, ho ho. The Simpsons, season 31, episode 10, "Bobby: It's Cold Outside," is a double-stuffed bag for the chimney. It is their annual Christmas episode, and these halls are decked. The episode features evergreen favorite recurring villain Sideshow Bob, who trims his tree with ornaments of bleeding Barts. And it bottoms out with our Springfield's favorite Grinch.
After what appears to be another ingenious escape from the revolving door penal system in Springfield, Sideshow Bob winters by the sea, where he tends a lighthouse. I heard the song "I want to marry a lighthouse keeper," from Clockwork Orange in my head the whole time he is visited by a distant neighbor who is very pleased he is single. Whether it's his mop of red hair, tall thin frame and big feet,...

When Olivia Wilde went in to pitch herself to Annapurna to direct Booksmart, she didn’t refer to other teenage movies of yore, i..e the John Hughes or Amy Heckerling canon, rather the Denzel Washington La noir Training Day.
The reference spoke to the intensity she aimed to incorporate in what could be seen on its cover as a female Superbad. Booksmart follows two female academic achievers, Amy and Molly (Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein) who on their last night before high school graduation realize that their best days as teenagers has passed them by. Meanwhile their peers and rivals, who’ve partied on, have also gotten into platinum colleges — or even going to work for Google. So, Amy and Molly embark on a night of excess, en route to a party where Beanie will find her guy, and Molly her girl.

“The Simpsons” has never shied away from lampooning Disney over the years, but maybe that’s no longer the case.
Homer, Marge and co. are of course now part of the Disney family and made their first appearance at the Mouse House’s D23 Expo convention, where the show’s producers were asked plenty of questions about what the relocation as part of the Disney-Fox merger means for the series.
The assembled “Simpsons” gang addressed the ever-present question of a second movie outing for the characters, with executive producer Al Jean teasing that they “have talked about it” with Disney, as well as ideas for potential spinoff series.
“I think Disney would be supportive of anything we wanted to do, maybe a crazy limited series with a side character or a movie that we surprised you with, they’ve been really creatively supportive and this is going to afford...

Mark Russell takes on Green Lantern's deadliest foe in Sinestro: Year of the Villain.
Mark Russell would seem like an odd choice to write a Sinestro comic. Before he started writing the shockingly terrific Wonder Twins in the mainstream Dcu; before the critical darlings that were Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles or The Flintstones; even before the too-beautiful-for-its-time Prez, Russell got his start in comics when Top Shelf picked up a book that grew out of his party trick, where he would sarcastically retell books of The Bible off the top of his head. He and Shannon Wheeler turned it into God Is Disappointed In You, and while it's a ways off from his new project - Sinestro: Year of the Villain #1 - it's less different than you might think.

In the view of this writer, Supergirl has yet to recapture the glory of its first two seasons. The show has had its ups and downs in the time since, but bright spots such as Jon Cryer’s incredible performances as Lex Luthor aren’t always enough to make up for the producers going full-on Lisa Simpson by using their prime time slot as a political soapbox.
If you don’t believe me, then take a gander at the comments section of pretty much any Supergirl discussion on social media, and you’ll see at least a few people expressing discontent with the heavily political direction. As I’ve said in the past, having a strong moral center isn’t necessarily mutually exclusive with whichever way you lean on the political spectrum, something Hollywood would care to take note of.

While the future of everyone’s favorite ragtag group of heroes was, at one point, looking grim, it seems like everything’s slowly getting back on track. After being fired from the project, Disney eventually changed their mind and decided to bring James Gunn on board for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Even since then, plenty of rumors regarding casting and plotlines have come to light, though it’s hard to tell exactly what the House of Mouse has in store for fans.
We already shared reports speculating that Mark Hamill and Zac Efron would be joining the cast, and since then, it looks like another juicy rumor has come to light. The 30th Anniversary panel of The Simpsons didn’t shy from addressing the elephant in the room at tonight’s Tribeca Talks: Their new boss, Disney.
Yeardley Smith (Lisa Simpson) broached the question about Disney to the panel which included EPs James L. Brooks, Matt Groening, Al Jean, Matt Selman and series voiceover maestro Harry Shearer. It was announced at the Disney investor day earlier this month that the studio’s new streaming service Disney+ will be the new Svod home of all 30 seasons of The Simpsons starting Nov. 12, a deal which will impact the off-network deal the series already has in place at FX. The Simpsons was recently renewed for seasons 31 and 32 on Fox.
“For us, I think to be honest about it, it’s been energizing,” Brooks said about the Disney-Fox marriage. “It’s like being forced out of college or something…I still think you can do everything we want.

“The Simpsons” takes on the recent trend of religious films at the box office in the show’s Season 30 premiere, “Bart’s Not Dead.” The episode features several guest vocal stars, including “Wonder Woman’s” Gal Gadot. Scroll down below for a first look at Gadot, playing herself — auditioning for a role in “Bart’s Not Dead,” a religious film being spearhead by Ned Flanders (naturally) and Homer Simpson (really).
In the episode, which premieres Sunday, Sept. 30, at 8 p.m. Et on Fox, Bart ends up in the hospital after taking a dare and jumping off the Springfield dam. At Homer’s urging, Bart claims he went to Heaven and met Jesus — and that attracts Christian producers to offer the Simpsons a movie deal, which they turn into the religious film “Bart’s Not Dead” (a riff on the real box office hit “God’s Not Dead”). As the narrator for Netflix’s Disenchantment teaser explains, we’ve seen Matt Groening’s take on the future in Futurama, the present in The Simpsons, so all that’s left is…Disenchantment. In a past, Middle Ages-type kingdom, a monk-robed prisoner is brought before a King for judgement, and the “pile of scum” certainly receives it: “Weak chin, buck teeth,” etc.
The poor soul’s response? “Hi, Dad,” spoken in a voice that had me thinking a medieval Lisa Simpson.
Coming to Netflix in August, Groening’s 10-episode adult animated comedy fantasy series Disenchantment will take viewers to “the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where they will follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.”

It may come as a surprise, but Bill Maher has another strong opinion and isn’t afraid of expressing it. In his latest “New Rule” segment, the “Real Time” host posited that we’d all be better off if we quit reevaluating pop culture through a contemporary lens — or, in his words, “stop being surprised every time you watch an old movie or TV show and find some of the ideas in it are old.”
Maher’s thoughts were prompted by both Molly Ringwald’s article in the New Yorker revisiting the films she made with John Hughes and the ongoing debate about Apu and “The Simpsons.” He noted that Ringwald found such movies as “Sixteen Candles” and “The Breakfast Club” “troubling in the age of #MeToo” and was “was taken aback ‘by the scope of the ugliness.'” “Oh please,” he said. “They were teen comedies, not snuff films.

Update with video Bill Maher had something he wanted to say on Real Time to those who have blasted old TV shows and movies for their “un-woke” standards. Shove a sock in it.
Enough with revisiting things,” Maher demanded, as his final New Rules entry on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher.
“Stop being surprised every time you watch an old movie or TV show and find some of the ideas in it are – old,” the late-night host demanded.
He cited a recent article by Molly Ringwald that got a lot of attention, in which she revisited The Breakfast Club and her other ’80s movies, “and found them troubling in the age of #MeToo,” Maher said, scolding, “She said she was taken aback ‘by the scope of the ugliness’.”
“Oh please. They were teen comedies, not snuff films,” Maher snarked.
“She said, ‘It’s hard for me to understand...

“The Simpsons” has responded to criticism about the stereotypical portrayal of Springfield’s Kwik-e-Mart proprietor Apu Nahasapeemapetilon. On Sunday’s episode, “No Good Read Goes Unpunished,” Marge and Lisa Simpson allude to the fact that “The Simpsons” has not quite figured out what to do with the character, or when to address it.
In the episode, the Simpsons visit a book store after Marge confiscates the family’s digital devices. At the store, Bart gravitates to “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu, and uses what he learns to take on Homer. Marge, meanwhile, attempts to hook her daughter on her favorite book as a child, [the fictional] “The Princess in the Garden” by Heloise Hodgeson Burwell — yes, a riff on “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
Once Marge begins reading “The Princess in the Garden” to Lisa, she quickly realizes the old book was a lot more offensive and racist than she remembered.
