Exclusive: Michael Matthews is set to direct Disney’s Merlin, an adaptation of T.A. Barron’s novel series where King Arthur’s wizardry mentor is at the center of the story. Ridley Scott, who directed the 20th Century Medieval pic The Last Duel, which bows today in theaters, was attached to direct at one point but parted ways due to his busy schedule. Sources say the film is still in early development with Disney’s live-action team.
Gil Netter is producing from with the latest draft by Chris Weitz.
Based on the Barron books, the series followed the origin story of a young Merlin who would go on to become the mentor of the classic literary character King Arthur. While several films have focused on the King Arthur legend, the only high-profile story to focus specifically on the story of Merlin was the NBC miniseries Merlin that starred Sam Neill.

Ridley Scott will Reportedly Start Shooting Disney's Merlin Saga This Fall and Here Are Some Details
According to a new report, director Ridley Scott is set to helm Disney’s Merlin Saga and apparently he’ll start production on it this fall.
A year ago it was reported that Scott was in negotiations to direct the film and if latest report from Hn Entertainment is true, it sounds like he is officially on board.
The script for the film was written by Philippa Boyens, who is best known for co-writing Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. With a team like Boyens and Scott developing this movie, it should turn out to be quite the fantasy epic!
The movie will be based on the T.A. Barron book series and the story follows the “origin story of a young Merlin who would go on to become the mentor of the classic literary character King Arthur.”
According to the report, the project will move forward...

The Merlin Saga: Ridley Scott (All the Money in the World, above) is in talks to direct Disney's The Merlin Saga. It's drawn from a series of books by T.A. Barron detailing an origin story for Merlin, who, in legend, became the mentor of King Arthur. Philippa Boyens (The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films) is writing the screenplay. Separately, Disney is also developing a live-action version of Sword in the Stone, which would likely focus on King Arthur himself. [Variety] Captain Marvel: DeWanda Wise, who recently starred in Spike Lee's version of She's Gotta Have It for Netflix (above), has joined the cast of Captain Marvel. No details about the role have been revealed yet; Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law and Ben Mendelsohn are already...

It looks like Ridley Scott may have found his next film project. According to Variety, he is in talks to direct The Merlin Saga for Disney.
I heard from one of my sources awhile back that Ridley Scott was in talks for a Disney film but I didn’t know it would be this. I thought it would be for the live-action adaptation of The Sword and the Stone, but I guess this is pretty close! The report did confirm he was in talks for Sword in the Stone as well, which is still in development.
The movie is being written by Philippa Boyens (The Lord of the Rings) and it will be based on the T.A. Barron book series. The story follows the “origin story of a young Merlin who would go on to become the mentor of the classic literary character King Arthur.”

Well, this is certainly surprising to hear.
Variety is reporting tonight that Disney is in talks with the legendary Ridley Scott to direct The Merlin Saga for them. Based on the novels by T.A. Barron, which have been adapted by Philippa Boyens, the project will tell the origin story of its titular protagonist, “who would go on to become the mentor of the classic literary character King Arthur.”
From what we understand, Barron’s series spans 12 novels and while it’s unclear which of them Scott’s film will adapt, we imagine that Disney is angling this as a potential franchise, with The Merlin Saga to perhaps bring to life the first and maybe even second book, while future sequels handle the rest.
Courtesy of Amazon, here’s the official synopsis:

"Lord of the Rings" screenwriter Philippa Boyens will helm Disney's newest film franchise, "Merlin", based on the "Merlin Saga" from author T.A. Barron. Philippa Boyens is the perfect person to adapt this series, because she has spent the last 20 years of her life adapting two other wonderful book series for the big screen: "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings". Boyens even took home an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2004 for her work on "Return of the King", which she shares with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh. This version of "Merlin" will focus on the wizard's early life, as written in T.A. Barron's book, "Merlin, The Lost Years"."The Lost Years" is book one in a 10-book series, which means if "Merlin" does well at the box office, it could launch an entire franchise of films. "The Merlin Saga" has experienced an interesting journey in its years on the Hollywood market.

Philippa Boyens is the unsung hero of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. While Jackson and, to a lesser extent, Fran Walsh have recognition outside of those three movies, Boyens — an epic Tolkien nerd — does not. But she's the third part of that writing triumvirate, and she's co-written everything Jackson has directed since Fellowship. But it looks like she's spreading her wings and moving on to a solo project.
Deadline reports that Boyens has been hired to write an adaptation of T.A. Barron's The Merlin Saga, a series of books that tell the origin story of the famed Arthurian wizard. Here's the description of the first book from Amazon:
Washed up on the shores of ancient Wales, the boy had no home, no memory and no name...he was determined to find all three.

Philippa Boyens, one of the key scribes who helped bring J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" to the big screen, is set to pen a film adaptation of T.A. Barron's "The Merlin Saga" at Disney Pictures.
In the books, which is said to span a dozen volumes, the young wizard is the center of a much larger story where the stakes are no less than the future of magic in the world. Gil Netter is producing.
The period fantasy is being seen as a potential franchise launcher, one more akin to "Harry Potter" than the darker and more adult-targeted "King Arthur: Knights of the Roundtable" potential franchise that Guy Ritchie recently filmed and will release next year.
