Burna Boy makes deeply soulful songs that brim with a karma-clearing vivacity. The Nigerian native’s lucid bops feel like swagged-out libations to the ancestors: his songs convey a dutiful sense of history that blends seamlessly with the chill day-party vibes. And while the content in his songs is in many ways similar to that of other artists on the Afro-fusion scene, Burna Boy’s unique marriage of afrobeats, dancehall, and hip-hop feels earthy, alive, and innately spiritual; each cut (about love, lust, and stunting on haters) is somehow fortifying—like an aural amulet.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read unless you have watched “Tarrare,” the Season 3 finale of “Atlanta.”
The Season 3 finale of “Atlanta” is styled after the quirky and comforting French rom-com “Amélie,” though this version is weirder and grosser.
The episode is titled “Tarrare” after the 1700s French solider who was famous for a medical condition that made him constantly hungry — he was able to eat his own body weight in meat, and was also rumored to engage in cannibalism. In “Atlanta,” that hunger belongs to Van (Zazie Beetz), who becomes so unsure of who she is that she has a nervous breakdown, engulfing herself in a French alter ego complete with an accent, a boyfriend, an apartment and a job in a butcher shop that serves human hands.
Almost all of Season 3 takes place in Europe, focusing on Earn (series creator Donald Glover), Darius (Lakeith Stanfield) and Alfred aka Paper Boi...

“Atlanta” Season 3 came to a close last night with an episode that, in the show’s true fashion, was pretty strange.
The episode began with Candice, a friend of Van’s from Atlanta, and two of her friends sitting outside a café in Paris. The trio stumbles upon Van (Zazie Beetz), who has been largely absent from Paper Boi’s European tour this season. Except, is it Van?
It certainly seems so, despite the fact that she now has a blunt bob haircut, speaks with a French accent, and carries a baguette in her backpack. The episode quickly goes from confusing to heartfelt as Candice begins to unravel Van’s current emotional turmoil that prompted her to run away from “Atlanta” and leave her daughter, Lottie, behind.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Atlanta” Season 3, Episode 10, “Tarrare,” including the ending and post-credits scene.]
As if any other ending was possible, the “Atlanta” Season 3 finale provided quite the exclamation point to Donald Glover’s European tour. Fake French accents. Stale, bloody baguettes. Literal finger food. “Tarrare” had it all, including an Ashanti-dancing, bikini-bottomed, masturbating-in-shame Alexander Skarsgard.
Most significantly, Episode 10 offered valuable insight into what Van (Zazie Beetz) has been going through during her impromptu trip to Europe. She’s drifted in and out of earlier episodes, offering little explanation for her whereabouts or state of mind, but “Tarrare” finds her with a whole new identity. Van has a French fiancé. She’s working as his sous-chef and server. She’s planning to move her daughter to Paris and stay there for good. But an unexpected visit from Candice (Adriyan Rae), a friend and fellow Atlantan, forces Van to confront not only her present reality,...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of tonight’s Season 3 finale of FX’s Atlanta
“We wanted to end this season or end that episode with the feeling of some things have been addressed, but not necessarily solved,” says Zazie Beetz of tonight’s very Parisian finale of Atlanta’s penultimate season. “I think in Season 4, there’s a continuation of identity searching,” says the actress who plays Van of the Donald Glover, Brian Tyree Henry and Lakeith Stansfield co-starring FX series.
“That is a lifelong journey I think, and it takes on a bit of another context.”
A delicate weave of whispers of 1960’s Breathless, 1993’s Killing Zoe, 2016’s Raw and more than a dollop or two of 2001’s Amélie, literally and figuratively, the Glover helmed and Stefani Robinson penned “Tarrare” was a feast of a finale for the March 24 premiering third season.
