Those who know who Roland Emmerich is will probably know that the director is known for his epic films, a lot of which are also major disaster films. Some of these major titles include Universal Soldier (1992), Stargate (1994), Independence Day (1996) and its sequel Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), Godzilla (1998), The Patriot (2000), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), 10,000 BC (2008), 2012 (2009), White House Down (2013), Midway (2019), and Moonfall (2022). But, Emmerich is now shifting to television, as his new project is about to be released on Peacock this summer. Ahead of the premiere, a teaser trailer has been released.
The project in question is the epic sword-and-sandal series Those About to Die, which is set in Ancient Rome. The series will be based on the book of the same name by writer and journalist Daniel P. Mannix; interesting enough, the same book served as the basis for Ridley Scott’s epic classic, Gladiator.

Do you like movies about gladiators?
Hollywood is betting you do.
There are a trio of sword-and-sandal epics in the works, including a long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning 2000 movie Gladiator and a reboot of Starz’ groundbreaking TV series Spartacus.
The curious surge of Ancient Rome titles in the pipeline seems to be purely coincidental, but it also makes sense given that studios have been searching for the next genre title that might break out — particularly since the end of HBO’s Game of Thrones — and given the revival of another muscular old-time Hollywood genre, the Western, following the explosive popularity of Yellowstone. Each project has roots in a different take on the material, and two of the projects had major casting news within the past week.
The gladiator genre actually has cinema roots dating all the way back to the 1913 silent film The Last Days of Pompeii. The...

Barcelona production-distribution outfit Filmax is at this year’s L.A. Virtual Screenings with its most recent TV acquisition, Basque drama “Mouths of Sand” (“Hondar ahoak”) from leading regional film production company Txintxua Films, its first foray into TV production.
Originally commissioned by local Basque public TV broadcaster Etb, the series’ global rights were scooped by Filmax after episode one was buzzed up by critics and viewers on social media in its local market. The series fits nicely within the framework of high-end regional content coming from the northern Spanish community, which has had a large success in film production. Irene Anula, a star of breakout Spanish TV hit “Vis a Vis” (“Locked Up”), is attached to topline Aitor Uribarri’s survival thriller “Kintsugi,” which Spain’s Mano Negra Films will introduce to potential co-production partners at the Locarno Festival’s Match Me! forum.
Along with “Lady Laura,” starring “Locked Up’s” Itziar Castro and written and directed by Manuel Aguilar, “Kintsugi” marks another step up in production ambition at the Seville-based Mano Negra, which producer Daniel Mendez founded in 2010. First focusing on documentaries – most recently Vanessa Benítez’s “Rota n’ Roll” (2017); Guillermo Rocamora’s “Freedom is a Big Word” (2018) – Mano Negra moved into minority international fiction co-production, boarding Argentine Juan Schnitman’S upcoming “La sangre.” “Lady Laura” and “Kintsugi” mark its first two full-blown lead fiction feature productions.

Mipdrama Buyers’ Summit: Scale, Comedy, Noir
European drama serie production continues to scale up, is driving ever more into comedy, while Nordic Noir’s is still going international, if the selection of 10 productions at this year’s MipDrama Buyers’ Summit is anything to go by. Meanwhile, established players are driving ever more into drama series production.
Produced by Mammoth Screen, BBC One’s “World on Fire,” an epic drama about ordinary people in early WWII starring Sean Bean and Helen Hunt, weighs in as the Summit’s biggest series.
Also to be pitched via 15 minutes of extracts, however, is Norwegian broadcaster Nrk’s “Atlantic Crossing,” charting the relationship between Norway’s Crown Princess Märtha and Franklin D. Roosevelt (Kyle Maclachan).
Nordic Noir continues its global roll-out with Kiwi Noir – crime thriller “The Gulf,” chronicling a woman cop’s moral disintegration, another MipDrama entry – and Ukrainian Noir: Missing child crime drama-thriller “Hide and Seek.

This looks freaky cool. A full-length international trailer has debuted for a Spanish horror fantasy film titled Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil, which has been playing at a few of the big horror film festivals in Europe since premiering in Sitges late last year. From Spanish filmmaker Paul Urkijo Alijo, Errementari does tell the story of a blacksmith outside of a small town, who is perhaps possessed by the devil. It's actually about a government commissioner investigating the blacksmith, and a young orphan girl named Usue who manages to sneak inside the smithy's place and discover the truth. Errementari stars Kandido Uranga as the blacksmith Patxi, Uma Bracaglia as Usue, plus Eneko Sagardoy, Ramón Aguirre, José Ramón Argoitia, Gorka Aguinagalde, Josean Bengoetxea, and Iñigo de la Iglesia. I'm not sure what to make of this, could be good or could be bad. The shot of the devil at the end is wicked.

A new film poster has been revealed for Errementari: The Blacksmith And The Devil. The graphic is a bit of a mind-binder as a face overshadows a blacksmith and a young girl. Errementari is being developed by first time feature film director Paul Urkijo Alijo and producer Álex de la Iglesia (Witching and Bitching, 2013). Already finished, this title is in post-production. As well, the film stars: Eneko Sagardoy and Kandido Uranga. The latest details on Errementari are hosted here. The film' story involves a solitary blacksmith and a harassing Devil. The Devil wants the blacksmith's soul. Meanwhile, the blacksmith wants to escape his prison. A young girl offers a solution, if both the blacksmith and Devil will allow her to help. Errementari will be released in the Basque language. Though, a release date has not been announced. And, the director says of the film and its Basque roots: "this...
