It’s been a rough few weeks for indies but May is here with a handful of hopefuls looking to rev up the market — from A24’s buzzy I Saw The TV Glow to Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Venice award-winning Evil Does Not Exist. A documentary about Anita Pallenberg featuring Scarlett Johansson hits theaters, with a French animated sci-fi set on Mars, and a Flannery O’Conner biopic by Ethan Hawke.
I Saw The TV Glow is written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun (We’re All Going To The World’s Fair) and produced by Emma Stone under her Fruit Tree Banner. The horror-thriller that gripped Sundance (Deadline review called it a “trippy gut punch”) then SXSW follows a teenager named Owen trying to make it through life in the suburbs. The weirdness starts when his classmate introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show, a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own.

Whoopi Goldberg revealed Tuesday she used weight loss drug Mounjaro after weighing around 300 pounds when filming Till, which she starred in and produced. Goldberg joins a growing list of celebrities to speak openly about obesity drugs amid Oprah Winfrey’s ABC special which aired Monday.
Upon the film’s release in 2022, Goldberg took a moment to respond to a reporter’s claim she wore a fat suit to play the role. “I don’t really care how you felt about the movie,” she said at the time, “but you should know that was not a fat suit, that was me. That was steroids.”
While filming the movie, in which she portrayed Emmett Till’s grandmother Alma Carthan, Goldberg suffered a near-fatal health scare that involved double pneumonia and sepsis.
“I had taken all those steroids, I was on all this stuff,” Goldberg said on The View this week, recounting the incident.

The “Cruel Intentions” TV series is officially going to Amazon’s Prime Video.
The series was initially ordered at Amazon back in April, though at the time it was unclear if it would stream on Prime Video or Freevee, Amazon’s AVOD platform. The first season will consist of eight episodes.
Amazon has also confirmed the cast members for the series, many of whom Variety reported exclusively in June. The main cast will include: Sarah Catherine Hook (“First Kill”), Zac Burgess (“Totally Completely Fine”), Savannah Lee Smith (“Gossip Girl”), Sara Silva (“American Horror Stories”), Khobe Clarke, John Harlan Kim, Brooke Lena Johnson (“You”), and Sean Patrick Thomas (“Till”). Claire Forlani, Nikki Crawford, Isabella Tagliati, Zeke Goodman and Jon Tenney will appear in recurring roles.
“From the ‘90s cult-classic film to the 18th-century novel from which it was adapted, Cruel Intentions has captivated audiences with a story that transcends time,” said Lauren Anderson,...

"The Twilight Zone" may have only lasted for five seasons during its initial run from 1959 to 1964, but its legacy appears to be eternal. In addition to being revived multiple times over the decades as well as receiving the feature-length treatment from Steven Spielberg and John Landis, the original show is widely regarded as one of the greatest in television history. It's no secret that "The Twilight Zone" was the brainchild of Rod Serling, who wrote most of the episodes and doubled as its suave yet mysterious narrator. In that capacity, h delivered many classic stories that took audiences to strange and wondrous places, blending elements of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy.
However, while the immense imagination behind "The Twilight Zone" alone cements its position in the pantheon of classic TV shows, what really made it so special was its intelligence. On the series' surface, it rated as a piece of well-made escapism.

Past winners of that award have included Ava DuVernay and Kenya Barris.

The 23rd BET Awards were given out on Sunday evening, in a five hour-plus (!) ceremony held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
This year’s host-less BET Awards had a lot going on, including a star-studded celebration of 50 years of hip hop (featuring musical medleys curated by DJ and producer Kid Capri); a tribute to the late Tina Turner, led by the legendary (if teleprompter-challenged) Patti Labelle; the recognition of Busta Rhymes with the Lifetime Achievement Award; and performances by nominees Coco Jones, Ice Spice, GloRilla and Latto, plus Doechii, Lil Uzi Vert and Mad Lion.

Rammstein drummer Christoph Schneider has issued a statement on social media about the sexual misconduct allegations against frontman Till Lindeman, stating in part that the singer “has distanced himself from us in recent years and created his own bubble.”
The statement was posted to Schneider’s official social media accounts in his native German and opens with him stating the accusations have “shaken us as a band and me as a person.” Regarding the parties where the misconduct has been alleged to have taken place, Schneider said that he hadn’t seen or heard of “anything illegal” going on, but “things seem to have happened that, although legally ok, I personally don’t think are ok.”
Schneider continued by saying, “Certain structures have grown that went beyond the limits and values of the other band members. It is also important to us that Till’s parties are not confused with our official after-show parties.

Carolyn Bryant Donham, the white woman whose claim that 14-year-old Emmett Till whistled at her during a grocery store visit led to the Black teenager’s brutal murder in August 1955, died of cancer Tuesday in Westlake, Louisiana. She was 88.

In May, Prime Video will return to the world of live awards shows as it again broadcasts the Academy of Country Music Awards on May 11. The major event will be hosted by country-music superstars Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks. The 58th ACM Awards will stream live from The Star in Frisco, Texas. One of the benefits of an awards show on a streaming service is that it doesn’t run commercials. If Prime Video continues the tradition it started last year, the ACMs will utilize the entire venue to keep the action moving throughout the show.
Coming to the streaming service in May is Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” a charming, stylized coming-of-age adventure about two offbeat 12-year-olds (played by Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman) who find solace in each other. Their touching romance is a potent reminder that love comes at all ages — and adults have much to learn from children.

Rammstein are known for their elaborate music videos, which usually see frontman Till Lindemann in the starring role. The singer has once again flexed his acting skills in a new commercial for the online poker site GGPoker.
In the unsettling four-minute clip, Lindemann plays the role of multiple participants in a high-stakes poker game. There’s Cowboy Till with his prominent ‘stache and stetson; the mohawk’d Punk Till; suave Till, accompanied by a lady; nerdy Till wearing a sweater vest; and the ominous dealer Till, donning samurai attire.
From there, the poker game is depicted through symbolic sequences. When Suave Till loses a large bet, he’s suddenly engaged in a fencing match with his opponent, where he takes a slash to the cheek. The weirdest of these cutaways involves dark religious imagery, in which Nerdy Till — counting cards in his head — appears to take communion from an angelic figure spewing blood.

“Deep, deep down, I knew it was going to be an uphill experience, and I was ready. I was all for it, and it ended up being much harder than I was expecting, but we showed up every day,” admits Zoe Saldana about starring in and co-producing the hit Netflix limited series “From Scratch.” For our recent webchat she adds, “the cast, the LA crew, the Italian crew; we showed up every day, and we gave it 120%. It didn’t matter if it was 16 hour days or 10 hour days. We were in it because we had all been moved by [writer and co-creator] Tembi’s story. But also we all had our personal share of grief, and we were there for ourselves as well, and Tembi gave us that space. When the Oscar nominations were announced in January, some of the most prominent omissions were films made by and starring Black women, including Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King, with a cast led by Viola Davis; Chinonye Chukwu’s Till, starring Danielle Deadwyler; and Alice Diop’s Saint Omer, which was France’s selection for international film. Prince-Bythewood opens up about what those omissions mean to her.
I am currently a producer on a project, and the executives were adamant that the director we chose be a Black Oscar-winning director. While that sounds great, who would that be? In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, no Black filmmaker has ever won best director. No Black woman has ever been nominated.
This awards season was an eye-opener. I was thinking about how to encapsulate what it feels like to be a Black filmmaker in the awards conversation, and I thought...

It’s not Andrea Riseborough’s fault that zero Black women were nominated for best actress this year. Still, with no such representation for the second consecutive year, the “To Leslie” star’s surprise inclusion is far more pronounced. Through a grassroots effort made up of predominantly white acting peers, Riseborough’s managing and publicity teams orchestrated a concentrated campaign that landed her a nom — and exposed an awards ecosystem that doesn’t naturally seek out Black women.
Viola Davis (“The Woman King”) and Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) were favored to be best actress nominees — this in a category that has seen only one Black woman, Halle Berry, win in 95 years. After scoring key mentions from industry groups, neither contender received a nod. Alas, their snubs recall what Morpheus says in “The Matrix Reloaded” when gazing on his spaceship, the Nebuchadnezzar, exploding in flames: “I have dreamed a dream, but now...

At this point in the Screen Actors Guild Awards’ 28-year history, the only woman who has been nominated for Best Film Actress multiple times and never lost is Viola Davis. Having earned bookend trophies for “The Help” (2012) and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (2021), she is now in the hunt for a category record-breaking third win for “The Woman King.” Her competition is arguably stiffer than ever, but, based on the consistency of the support she has received from her guild peers, the prize is still well within her reach.
Davis stars in “The Woman King” as Nanisca, a 19th century West African general who partially represents the real-life warriors who fought to defend the Dahomey kingdom. A Best Film Actress victory would be her seventh across all SAG Award categories, and she could reasonably achieve her eighth as a member of the movie’s ensemble. What’s more, she even has...

We have Denzel Washington’s single teardrop. We have Viola Davis’ runny nose. And now, we have Danielle Deadwyler’s lip quiver, expertly executed in Chinonye Chukwu’s deeply moving drama “Till.” Another best actress contender emerges although I wish the film could rise to the level of Deadwyler’s performance.
The sturdy drama follows Mamie Till-Mobley (Deadwyler), the mother of Emmett Till, whose abduction and lynching in 1955 sparked global outrage and served as an important catalyst in the civil rights movement. “Till” charts Mamie’s grief, as well as her pursuit of justice. But getting people to see a movie about such a horrific event will be a tough sell, even if the film avoids depicting much of the brutality of Emmett Till’s killing.
In the weeks leading up to its debut at the New York Film Festival where it had its world premiere on Saturday, I’ve told dozens of people – colleagues,...

“My Nephew Emmett” seeks to show a different perspective of what lead to the brutal murder of Emmett Louis Till in 1955. The film, one of the five nominees for the Best Live Action Short Oscar, is told from the point-of-view of Mose Wright, Emmett’s uncle that he was visiting in Mississippi. The film, which claimed a Gold Medal at the Student Academy Awards, is one of this year’s nominees at the Oscars for Best Live Action Short and marks the first bid by writer and director Kevin Wilson Jr.
The film opens with Mose showing Emmett how much cologne to apply but Emmett still puts on too much. While Emmett goes into town with his cousin, Maurice, Mose is told he needs to take a bath. When he goes to get water for the bath he encounters a neighbor at the pump. The neighbor says that he’s...
