Nick Offerman plays the Potus in the dystopian action film Civil War, but although some liken his character to Donald Trump, the actor didn’t think about him during filming.
“Honestly, no,” Offerman told Deadline during the film’s premiere. “When you see the movie, it’s so unattached to anything in modern politics, not only in our country but any country. It’s like doing a play where I’m playing a baseball player, and people say, ‘Did you ever think of your favorite team, the Cubs?’ And I say, ‘No, it’s a brilliant piece of fiction.'”
He continued, “From the get-go, it clearly wasn’t based on anything in reality, and so, that’s a distraction, and my job is to immediately say, ‘Who is this guy? And how can I best serve Alex [Garland’s] vision.'”

It's been less than 15 years since 20th Century Fox tried to leverage the "Percy Jackson" series of books by Rick Riordan into their own version of a "Harry Potter" franchise, replete with well-known adult actors, a group of less familiar child actors, a fantastical setting, and even the director of the first two "Potter" films. But while "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" did well enough to merit a sequel, there must have been some sense of a story that wasn't told as effectively as possible. Now, as we wrap up 2023, and as Disney+ embarks on its fifth year of existence, Percy is back and this time in TV form. "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" (please note the lack of an ampersand in this show's title) goes through the basic story that made up the 2010 film subtitled "The Lightning Thief," but has the benefit and imprimatur of Riordan as...

Author Rick Riordan once candidly described the 2010 film adaptation of his novel The Lightning Thief as “my life’s work going through a meat grinder.” Indeed, that early attempt at adapting the first book in Riordan’s kid-lit series Percy Jackson & the Olympians is a cheesily generic fantasy film that deviates from the book’s blueprint to an extent that fans can’t forgive. What, then, to make of the new Disney+ series, which has the imprimatur of Riordan as executive producer and co-writer, and yet feels even further away from the spirit of the books?
If fans are seeking nothing but fidelity, they’ll find a faithful outline here. While Chris Columbus’s 2010 film aged up its heroes, the show’s version of Percy (Walker Scobell) and his companions all seem like real middle schoolers. And the plot points, at least based on the four episodes made available to press for review,...

The actors join an ensemble that also includes Susan Sarandon, Bette Midler, and Megan Mullally, as previously announced. A24 has become a household name, even among general audiences, because of its penchant for finding unconventional stories that appeal to niche audiences. Many casual moviegoers have been frustrated by the patience required for the more substantial and less generic storytelling typically found within an A24 film, from recent entries like "The Green Knight" back to Jonathan Glazer's "Under the Skin." But when it comes to "Dicks: The Musical," the raunchy R-rated comedy from fresh-faced comedians and collaborators Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp and "Borat" director/"Seinfeld" executive producer Larry Charles, you pretty much get exactly what has been advertised in the movie's zany trailer.
Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp star in "Dicks: The Musical," which they also wrote the script, lyrics, and book for, based on their own off-off-Broadway stage show that originated at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. Right at the top of the movie, bumper cards inform...

Based on Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp’s Off-Broadway show Fucking Identical Twins, Dicks: The Musical plays to the cheap seats from the get-go. This perverse riff on The Parent Trap—in which identical twins separated at birth, Craig (Sharp) and Trevor (Jackson), meet and try to reunite their gay father, Harris (Nathan Lane), with their agoraphobic, wheelchair-bound mother, Evelyn (Megan Mullally)—delights in breaking the rules of good taste. Yet its ceaseless reveling in the raunchy and depraved, including a queer, coke-snorting God (Bowen Yang) and a detached flying vagina, is all that Dicks has going for it.
Larry Charles’s film opens with something of a mission statement: sarcastic on-screen text declaring that Sharp and Jackson are gay and that their decision to play misogynistic straight dudes is incredibly brave. It’s a clear shot at the overt self-satisfaction of certain actors’ tendencies to inflate their own sense...

If you see one movie this year, make it “Dicks: The Musical,” if only because you genuinely won’t see anything else like it. What other movie can give you a “Parent Trap”-esque story of twins trying to get their parents back together that involves God in hot pants, twin-cest and Nathan Lane singing to a pair of “sewer boys”? And amongst all that weirdness, lies a story of love and tolerance that also pokes fun at conservatives which should be expected considering director Larry Charles helmed the equally audacious “Borat.”
The two eponymous dicks of the film are Craig and Trevor (Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson), a pair of overly confident alpha males who sell robotic vacuum parts when they aren’t having sex with a new woman every night. The first time director Larry Charles was invited to the Toronto International Film Festival, he brought along a little something called Borat, which, despite enduring an extended projector breakdown 20 minutes into its premiere screening, emerged as a word-of-mouth sensation. Now, some 17 years later, Charles has returned to the festival’s Midnight Madness section with Dicks: The Musical, which not only screened without a technical hitch, but emerges as a certified wave-maker in its own right.
Created by and starring Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, making the transition from a 30-minute, six-song play called F*cking Identical Twins — mounted in the basement home of New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade — to a feature-length, all-singing, all-dancing, naughty goof on The Parent Trap, the movie packs an infectious albeit ephemeral punch.

Hot off “Dicks: The Musical’s” premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, A24 has released the song “All Love is Love” from the film.

The song was composed by “Moulin Rouge’s” Marius de Vries and Karl Saint Lucy, and co-written with the film’s writers and stars Jackson and Sharp.
“Dicks: the Musical” is a wild and raunchy comedy starring Jackson and Sharp as antagonistic businessmen and long-lost twins with a plan to trick their separated parents. When God (Bowen Yang) sees two virile young men plowing women, selling gears, and telling everyone they know that they do both of those things better than anyone else He ever created, He also sees their profound sadness. Because despite living their best lives, Craig (Josh Sharp) and Trevor (Aaron Jackson) don’t know love. Not familial love. One never had a father. The other never had a mother. And, as everyone knows, a one-parent home isn’t really a home at all. No, it’s borderline child abuse.
That’s the premise behind Sharp and Jackson’s toxically heteronormative satire Dicks: The Musical, directed by Larry Charles and based on the pair’s Upright Citizens Brigade stage musical Fucking Identical Twins. They may not look it (and the film makes forcing us to believe it anyway into a thing), but Craig and Trevor are brothers. Twin brothers. That’s...

There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who might want to see a ridiculously irreverent musical riff on “The Parent Trap” in which the estranged identical twins aren’t cute tweenage children but rather grown-ass men who sing about sacks of cum and clearly want to have sex with each other… and those who might not. Flesh-eating sewer monsters, genitals with wings, grave robbing, two confused “identical twins” and 90 minutes of sexual innuendo is what you can expect from comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp’s stage show-turned-movie. Directed by Larry Charles and written by and starring the duo, the film also features Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Megan Thee Stallion and Bowen Yang. As a viewer, I often wondered how the hell this got turned into the movie because it is so outrageous. Thankfully, it succeeds at being fun and funny because anything less would have amounted to torture.
In a wicked exploration of twinhood and identity, we’re introduced to the not-so-identical twins, Craig (Sharp) and Trevor (Jackson). What are the odds that two openly gay cut-ups doing a raunchy half-hour musical comedy routine in a Gristedes grocery store would somehow convince “Borat” director Larry Charles to turn their show, “Fucking Identical Twins,” into a feature-length A24 movie? You’d stand a better chance playing the lottery than predicting the path “Dicks: The Musical” took to reach the big screen — which is exactly why this twisted cross between “The Parent Trap” and “Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy” seems destined for cult status.
The absurdist brainchild of Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, “Dicks” is an unapologetically puerile, hard-r novelty that’s just lo-fi enough to maintain its underground cred. If any other distributor were backing it, “Dicks” might shrivel into home-video obscurity. Written and directed by Chelsea Peretti, First Time Female Director lives in the self-deprecating world of meta storytelling. Debuting at the Tribeca Festival in the Spotlight Narrative section, Peretti put so much of herself into this narrative, it could work as a documentary. It’s also such a comically honest portrayal of what women must endure if they want to get ahead in any career, let alone the theater business. Having to constantly prove to yourself and others that you are capable is so exhausting, but can also be rewarding if you are set up for success. Many are often left to fend for themselves, and the film shows one way of how that can happen.
In addition to Peretti, First Time Female Director boast a hefty cast including Amy Poehler, Andy Richter, Benito Skinner, Blake Anderson, Megan Stalter, Megan Mullally, Jak Knight, and Xosha Roquemore, Kate Berlant and many more.

At the premiere party for season three of her series “Party Down,” Mullally admitted she has a new pet name for her spouse ever since his “Last of Us” episode aired. “He’s gotten so much acclaim for it … so I just started calling him ‘Episode Three’ around the house,” she said with a laugh. “I’m like, ‘Episode Three are you upstairs?’”

The following post contains spoilers about "Party Down" season 3.
The third season of the beloved cult favorite comedy series "Party Down" is finally upon us, and longtime fans are rejoicing. The new six-episode run sees most of the original cast returning, including Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Ryan Hansen, Martin Starr, Megan Mullally, and Jane Lynch. Set roughly ten years after the events of season 2, the thankless life of caterers in Los Angeles hasn't gotten any easier, although some of the wannabe actors and comedians have managed to escape the daily drudgery to have successful careers in the cutthroat entertainment business.
Former child actor Henry Pollard (Scott) has lost his girlfriend Casey Klein (Lizzy Caplan) to fame and fortune, and bo-hunk Kyle Bradway (Hansen) is on the verge of blockbuster stardom with a big role in a ridiculous science fiction franchise. To mark the event, Kyle hires the Party Down Catering...

Are we having fun yet?
On Party Down Season 3 Episode 1, after a protracted absence, the answer is an unqualified yes!
It's been 13 years since we last saw Henry Pollard, Ron Donald, Kyle Bradway, Roman DeBeers, and the rest of the Party Down gang.
First and foremost, it would be difficult to go awry with such a hilarious cast. This Cast, people! It's a comedy dream team.
You've got Adam Scott, Jane Lynch, and Megan Mullally for a start. Jennifer Garner and James Marsden are there to join in on the fun. Credit must also go to the slightly lesser-known but equally hilarious Ken Marino, Martin Starr, and Ryan Hansen.
Jane Lynch's comedic style has never quite been to my taste (as my reviews of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Only Murders In The Building can attest), but she is just perfect in this.
Ensemble comedy is one hundred percent her forte.

Let's take a moment to celebrate one of Hollywood's most wholesome and hilarious couples getting to share their unique on-screen chemistry once again. Megan Mullally joins the legion of fans who are hopeful that her husband Nick Offerman will receive an Emmy nomination for his much-praised performance in HBO’s “The Last of Us,” telling TheWrap that it will be “weird” if his name isn’t called when the nominations are announced on July 12.
At Wednesday night’s Season 3 premiere of “Party Down,” she told TheWrap, “He’s gotten so much acclaim for it and so many people have gotten in touch with him, so I just started calling him ‘Episode 3’ around the house. I’m like, ‘Episode 3,’ are you upstairs?'”
Offerman played the role of survivalist Bill in the third episode of the acclaimed series, which chronicled a years-long love story between Offerman’s character and a man played by Murray Bartlett. The episode has been hailed as one of the year’s best.

Nick Offerman has a new nickname around the house after his breakout role on HBO’s The Last of Us.
Offerman’s performance opposite Murray Bartlett in the third episode of the series, as a couple finding love amid the apocalypse, left the audience in tears when it aired in early February. As a result of the acclaim, wife Megan Mullally told The Hollywood Reporter that “I started calling him ‘Episode Three’ around the house.”
“So many people have gotten in touch with him to tell him how great he is, so it’s just kind of crazy,” she said on Wednesday night at the season three premiere of her show Party Down. “Even my cousin, who is in her 70s and lives in Tulsa, was like, ‘Episode three was magnificent!’ She didn’t say the name of the show. This is my cousin in Tulsa, so I just started calling him ‘Episode Three.

Starz recently dropped a trailer for the highly anticipated cult-comedy TV revival Party Down. Much of the original cast returned for the revival, led by Adam Scott, who reprised his role as failed actor Henry Pollard. Of course, many of his old friends are along for the ride, as well as some new ones.

The first two seasons aired in 2009 and 2010 on Starz. The show features a cast of Hollywood hopefuls working for a Los Angeles catering team while pursuing their dreams. Season 3 kicks off ten years later, where a reunion allows fans to see which characters made it big and which didn’t. But it wouldn’t be a revival without lots of callbacks. And the trailer reveals a few.

In the age of post-cancellation TV, dreams really can come true. To the tiny audience who tuned into Starz’s “Party Down” in 2009, its premature shunting from the air was a travesty — yet another instance of a comedy that general audiences didn’t quite get despite its evident genius. After only two critically acclaimed seasons, it was resigned to the dustbin of history.
But now, “Party Down” is back with most of the original cast on board (only Lizzy Caplan is missing) and a surprising amount of that lightning-in-a-bottle magic remains.
The first season introduced a pre-“Parks and Recreation” Adam Scott as Henry Pollard, a failed actor once seen as the next Pacino, who now works for a low-rent catering company alongside a slew of wannabe stars hoping for their big break. As many reviews for HBO’s survival drama The Last of Us have said, the show’s third episode is a real showstopper –– quite literally, as the show’s cross-country journey of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) was largely put on hold while the drama took the best possible kind of detour: A surprising and heartbreaking look at the apocalypse from an different perspective.
The episode (“Long Long Time”) introduced bunker-mentality survivalist Bill (Parks and Recreation‘s Nick Offerman) and affable traveler Frank (The White Lotus‘ Murray Bartlett) who become lovers that successfully fend off the horrors of the outside world across a 20-year partnership. Eventually, Frank becomes disabled and the two commit suicide. Their journey – as showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann note in The Hollywood Reporter‘s separate interview about this episode – is arguably the happiest ending that two people could realistically experience after the world has fallen apart.

In this era of so-called peak TV, television networks, cable channels, and streaming services continue to disgorge a head-spinning array of content on a seemingly daily basis. Watching all this content is simply a physical impossibility for one person. Given the sheer volume of television shows competing for viewers' attention, it's not surprising that a select few shows will inevitably rise to the top while others face the cruel axe of cancellation.
Yet this has always been the case since not every TV series deserves to become a hit. However, there have also been many shows that were high-quality but never quite managed to find the audiences that they should have.
