Ah, the double feature. Old Hollywood studios devised it as a way to run (B) movies too short or cheap to merit full price, but there's something undeniably fun about watching two movies back to back. The success of the unofficial double feature that defined 2023, "Barbenheimer," suggests I'm not alone in feeling this; comparing two films is a fun exercise, especially if you can find unexpected similarities.
Two masterpieces are back in the news this week in a great coincidence: "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" celebrates its 20th anniversary, while anime classic "The End of Evangelion" received its first-ever official U.S. theatrical release.
"Eternal Sunshine" is a sci-fi love story; Joel (Jim Carrey) discovers his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) had all her memories of him erased; he decides to do the same to his memories of her. "The End of Evangelion" is the conclusion of the TV show "Neon Genesis Evangelion,...

In the Japanese animated movie industry, the Evangelion series is considered one of the pioneers. The most latest movie in the collection was Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time and it was a sure hit. It is the fourth and last movie in the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise’s Rebuild of Evangelion film series, which is produced by Studio Khara.
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time
The film’s plot centers on Shinji Ikari, who is still lost and without hope after losing his will to life, but discovers what it means to have hope in a new location. In the end, Wille takes one more, difficult stance to stop the Final Impact, and the Instrumentality Project is launched. It was launched on March 8, 2021, and garnered positive feedback from both fans and critics.
Hideaki Anno co-directed, wrote, and produced the movie and it was probably the biggest film in the franchise.

Gkids announced on Wednesday that it will soon be bringing The End of Evangelion, the feature follow-up to Hideaki Anno’s influential anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, to North American theaters for the first time. The film will be screened in its original Japanese language with English subtitles, bowing in select theaters nationwide on March 17th and 20th.
Premiering in Japan in 1995, Neon Genesis Evangelion follows the story of Shinji Ikari, a reluctant teenager who is recruited by the shadowy organization Nerv to pilot a giant bio-mechanical robot called an Evangelion to defend Tokyo-3 from monstrous beings known as Angels. As Shinji grapples with his complex relationships with his distant father, Gendo, and his enigmatic fellow pilots, Rei and Asuka, he is forced to confront his own fears, insecurities, and the existential questions raised by the apocalyptic battles he faces.

Hideaki Anno’s four-part reworking of his philosophical 90s anime classic Neon Genesis Evangelion reaches its conclusion with an emotional father-son confrontation
As far as grandiose projections of one man’s psyche go, Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise must be near the top. Not only did he spin this iconic 90s anime series about a messianic mech-fighter blowout from his own clinical depression, but he’s also recently managed to chew over the material a second time, reworking it as a series of four films: the so-called Rebuild of Evangelion. Production on this final one – which roughly retreads the same story material as the highly rated 1997 cinema release End of Evangelion – was apparently slowed by another bout of Anno’s mental illness.
Part of what was reportedly blocking Anno creatively was that he struggled to identify with the protagonist Shinji Ikari, who has a more hopeful perspective on mankind,...

“Neon Genesis Evangelion” is one of the most celebrated and adored anime series of all time. When the series arrived, after years of only being available on what can charitably be described as the gray market, on Netflix in 2019, Vulture described the show as “equivalent in acclaim, auteurship, and cultural footprint to America’s ‘Twin Peaks’ or ‘2001: A Space Odyssey.’” And they are right. The show, the brainchild of mastermind Hideaki Anno, is a colossal, complicated achievement – a joyful celebration of giant robot media and a barbed deconstruction of the same media.
It is also a somewhat daunting proposition from the outside, with the entire “Neon Genesis Evangelion” franchise spread across the initial 26 episodes of the original show, plus several movies and an entire film franchise that essentially remade the series in a much weirder, more visually sophisticated way that is very much its own thing.

Takehiko Inoue’s “The First Slam Dunk” isn’t exactly the first movie ever made about a scrappy high school basketball team struggling to overcome their shared differences and personal demons in time for the big game against their undefeated rivals. It’s a tale as old as time, and one that Inoue himself has already told at great length over the course of a beloved manga that ran in “Weekly Shōnen Jump” from 1990 until 1996 — a manga he would revisit as the source material for his directorial debut some 30 years later.
But this blockbuster rookie effort, which arrives in the States having already become the fifth-highest grossing anime feature of all time, is such a fun and thrilling crowd-pleaser because it uses the hoariest tropes of its sub-genre as an alley-oop for one of the most formally ambitious and emotionally layered sports dramas to hit screens in the decades since Inoue stepped onto the court.

It is the perfect time to reflect on some of the essential works of filmmaker Hideaki Anno (b. 1960) in culmination with the recent release of his latest feature, “Shin Kamen Rider.” From his days as an animator to becoming one of Japan's most renowned directors working today, the postmodernist auteur has captivated and certainly polarized moviegoers with his unique line of work both in animation and live-action filmmaking. Taking influence from his favorite pieces of entertainment and his personal life experiences, Anno has become widely recognized for his extraordinary visual style, superb editing, and nonconformist approach to storytelling with the mental deconstruction and psychological examination of his characters. Anime fans likely know him best for his hit series “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” a show that has since then become a recognizable staple of Japanese media culture that would spawn numerous movies. Recently, he contributed as the screenwriter and producer of the spectacular superhero flick “Shin Ultraman,...

In "Mobile Suit Gundam," the operative word is sensō (war). Yoshiyuki Tomino's groundbreaking 1979 mecha anime series is a sci-fi war epic, grounded in practical human concerns. It just happens to involve giant robots.

Rejoice, "Evangelion" fans of America, for you finally have a chance to see the saga's conclusion in a theater. "Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon A Time" had a (very successful) theatrical run in its native Japan, but international audiences had to settle for a Prime Video release in August 2021. GKids has since acquired the North American distribution rights and has partnered with Fathom Events for theatrical exhibitions. After a one-night IMAX screening on November 30th, the film is playing during the week of December 6 in theaters across the U.S. These showings will exclusively show the subbed version of the film: Japanese audio, English subtitles. If you prefer your anime dubbed, you're out of luck.
This is the latest in a long line of hurdles dub watchers face in getting into "Evangelion." For starters, the "Rebuild" films which "Thrice Upon A Time" concludes have two English dubs — an incomplete one done by Funimation,...

Shinji Ikari isn’t a perfect person. He’s actually kind of a mess, but not without damn good reason: His mother died when he was 3 years old, his father abandoned him, and his entire world view has been shaped by the people around him, who try to maneuver Shinji any which way they’d like. On top of all that, he has to deal with all the typical stresses of being a teenager while regularly hopping into a giant biomechanical robot in order to defend humanity from the threat of monstrous beings tellingly referred to as “Angels.” And with each new iteration of the pioneering anime “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” Shinji relives this cycle of death, depression, and rebirth all over again.

We're living in a golden age of anime distribution. It's never been easier to access anime both old and new, be they movies or TV shows. Long gone are the days where you'd have to shell out hundreds of dollars for a VHS that only contained a couple of episodes, or seek out bootleg YouTube videos that split up every episode into tiny chunks (with the risk of one of the parts getting taken down) with fansubs that weren't totally accurate. Nowadays, anime movies get wide distribution in theaters across the United States, they get big marketing campaigns with Time Square promos, and they often top the box office.
This made the fact that "Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time," the last of the "Rebuild of Evangelion" movies, was dumped into streaming with barely any notice or promotion quite a tragedy. The movie had already been a huge hit in Japanese theaters,...

The following article contains discussion of abuse and suicide.
In the final episode of "Neon Genesis Evangelion," Shinji Ikari experiences an alternate reality where he and his friends are the leads in a slice-of-life rom-com instead of a mecha show. The lesson? There are endless possibilities and his life can be anything he wants.
"Evangelion" is a dense show, both textually and visually. It employs surreal imagery and rapid editing; some scenes look like you're watching them through a kaleidoscope. On top of that, it forces you to piece together its lore on your own. There's nary a MacGuffin or symbol in the show that isn't named for Judeo-Christian theology.
Since "Evangelion" never holds the audiences' hand, it's been subjected to countless, conflicting interpretations. Matt Greenfield, who wrote the first English dub of "Evangelion" for Adv Films, outright called the anime, "a Rorschach test" — what you get out of it...

"Flcl" and "Neon Genesis Evangelion" are anime classics, both of which pay homage to and deconstruct the mecha genre. The two are both famous for their surreal animation, but while "Evangelion" is introspective, kaleidoscopic, and nightmarish, "Flcl" is bonkers and revels in its rejection of formal sense. Even the characters are similar: Naota Nandaba from "Flcl" is a dead ringer for Shinji Ikari in "Evangelion," Mamimi Samejima has the same emotional disaffection as Rei Ayanami, and Haruko Haruhara feels like someone threw Misato Katsuragi and Asuka Langley Soryu in a blender. According to "Flcl" director Kazuya Tsurumaki, the similarities between the shows come from a common cultural...

When the first couple of episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion came out it didn't really seem like something special. Teenage kids piloting giant robots to save mankind; wish fulfilment coupled with adolescent sexual awkwardness and a comedy of manners. It was pretty standard fare for anime. But there was something lurking below the surface, like a thought you can't get rid of. In Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shinji Ikari (Megumi Ogata) is unwillingly recruited into Nerv by his estranged father Gendo (Fumihiko Tachiki). Nerv, under the command of Gendo, was set up in the aftermath of a cataclysmic event that melted Antarctica and flooded the world. Officially the cataclysm, known as the Second Impact, was caused by an asteroid crashing to earth. In actuality it was an experiment on the catatonic corpse of the Biblical Adam. In the aftermath Seele, the shadowy cabal behind the experiment, set up Nerv to combat.

Allow me to start with a very personal comment. Back in 1998, if I remember correctly, I borrowed the credit card from the father of a classmate, in order to buy from Amazon the VHS of Evangelion (just the first 4 episodes btw), a title which has caught my attention through an article in a video game magazine. And that was it, just from the first episode, my mind was completely blown, even though, as I understood much later on, I did not fathom even half the comments Anno was making in his series. It would take some years before I managed to acquire the whole series (in DVD this time) and a third viewing to truly realize the depth and the overall quality of this magnificent title. The thoughts included in the following review have resulted from the fourth viewing, which occurred a few days ago, as the anime is now streaming on Netflix.

After 26 years, “Evangelion” is finally over, and all’s right with the world. It’s been 14 years since Hideaki Anno started revisiting his legendary anime “Neon Genesis Evangelion” with the “Rebuild” movies, which may have started out as straight remakes, but quickly diverted into telling their own story as they moved past the events of the original show into unexplored territory. Now “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time” brings the long-delayed, highly anticipated tetralogy to a close with a bold, messy, uplifting, audacious, and emotional film that expands, complements, and comments upon what came before, while giving fans a fitting close not only to the movie series, but the entirety of “Evangelion.” With new technology and the benefit of hindsight at his disposal, Anno has finally been able to tell the story he’s been straining towards for his entire adult life — a story of healing and growing up.

Overall, the movie, which is the fourth and final installment in the Rebuild of Evangelion series, grossed nearly 828 million yen ($7.6 million). Of that, the Imax portion was $740,000.
The sci-fi animated movie also scored Imax’s highest ever opening day indexing for a local-language title in Japan, good for 10% of overall box office from only 1%-2% of total screens.
Also going by the title Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, the Toho Pictures release had been delayed by Covid and ultimately went out on an atypical Monday. Despite that, and along with a pandemic-related 8 p.m. curfew in key areas (including Tokyo), Imax recorded sellouts throughout the day, including at 6 a.m. showings.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show.Since around the 1990s, when serialized television started to overtake the medium and episodic storytelling fell by the wayside, television shows usually ended in climactic fashion with a definitive ending that wrapped everything up nicely. The best television series, however, end on an ellipsis. Some of this storytelling is incidental, a product of a show being cancelled before it could finish is story, but sometimes ending without the curtain coming down is the intended effect. David Lynch, popular American avant-garde director and chief mastermind behind the television series Twin Peaks, famously stated that he never wanted to solve the murder of “Who killed Laura Palmer?” because that question fuelled all of the narrative, and without an answer he could take the story in any direction he wanted.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show.[Tw: Discussions of Suicide]There are countless films and television series about the apocalypse, but few actually reckon with the existential horror of what the end actually means. Even great examples like Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and Gojira (1954) soften themselves near the end and reassure viewers that we survived. It is difficult to make something that is nihilistic to the point of saying we don’t go on as a species, because the film industry is tied up in capitalism and at the end of the day no one wants to be told that someday they won’t exist. But this is true for all of us. On a personal level, the apocalypse always comes; and we hope that we face the end with loved ones by our side...

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show.[Trigger Warning: Suicidal Ideation]“The world can change at any moment, based on what you’re feeling” —Rei Ayanami, Episode 26All throughout Neon Genesis Evangelion there have been vague mentions of “the Human Instrumentality Project”. It is Gendo Ikari’s final plan for the evolution of the human race. Giant monsters known as “Angels” have been attacking the post-apocalyptic city of Tokyo-3. They began their assault fifteen years after mankind tried to use the remains of an Angel to create and control an “actualized God”, and in the process brought about the cataclysmic Second Impact. That event nearly saw the extinction of the human race occur after the Polar ice caps melted instantaneously. Since that event happened, the common consensus is that a Third Impact would be inevitable and...

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show.Shinji Ikari is the hero of Neon Genesis Evangelion. I use the word “hero” loosely, because Shinji doesn’t act like someone you’d depend upon to save the world. He’s one of the child pilots of the robotic Eva-units that have been built to defend the post-apocalyptic city of Tokyo-3 from the monsters known as Angels. In the mecha anime genre the boy saviors of the world are usually confident at the very least, but Shinji doesn’t have these qualities. He isn’t comfortable in his own skin, he has anxiety around others his age, and he has intimacy issues with those who have offered him the breadcrumbs of their affection. His father, Gendo, is the mastermind behind the construction of...

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show.In the Old Testament of the Bible there’s a circular narrative built around stories of punishment and submission underneath the will of a divine force. If you had faith in God and his will then you could escape these punishments, like Noah or Lot in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. The morals of these stories are usually tied up in notions of there being a specific way that people are supposed to lead their lives. Neon Genesis Evangelion feels a bit like the Old Testament at times, with the beings known as Angels attacking what’s left of the human race. The Angel attacks feel like a divine punishment for trying to become like God through science. In the beginning of the show...

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show. The relationships we have with our parents as children tend to dictate our future in significant ways. Children usually look to their parents for foundation and support as they figure out who they are and what they want to be, but sometimes children are not given a base to stand upon. In Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion this is true of every significant character. The child pilots of the giant robotic Eva units struggle with this very thing. Shinji Ikari’s mother died mysteriously and he has never been given direct support or admiration from his father, Gendo, who is overseeing the Evas and military operations at Tokyo-3’s defense outpost. Asuka has a history with her parents that hasn’t been revealed yet,...

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show.Clip shows are not synonymous with greatness. They’re the sort of episodes that television shows used to run when they were behind schedule, or over-budget or looking for an easy way to do the bare-minimum. Episode fourteen of Hideaki Anno’s anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion is a clip show, but it subverts expectations by pulling the rug out from underneath viewers in a shocking second-half that marks an entirely new direction for the television show. The first half of this episode is presented as a military report to Seele, a secret organization controlling the military installation of Nerv, who are fighting the monsters known as Angels that are ravaging the city of Tokyo-3. Most television shows would merely take the footage that already...

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show. When Shinji Ikari goes to school for the first time in Neon Genesis Evangelion his teacher gives a lecture to the students on living during the “second impact.” It was a cataclysmic event for Earth where a meteorite is believed to have crash-landed in the polar ice caps, melting the arctic and forcing the Earth’s climate to change instantaneously. For this class of fourteen-year-olds they only know of this happening through hearsay or through history books. They weren’t alive when it happened so it’s more difficult for these children to grapple with the Earth dying in real-time. They’ve grown up in a world that is post-second impact, which isn’t easy in and of itself. After the second impact the planet...

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show. When Shinji Ikari arrives at Tokyo-3 in the very first episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion the city is in lockdown. The latest Angel, one of the giant, seemingly extra-terrestrial creatures mysteriously attacking a post-apocalyptic Earth trying to rebuild itself, has made itself known on their shores and a military attack is about to begin. Nerv operations director Misato Katsuragi was supposed to pick him up, but she’s late. Shinji seems calm, but the city is much too quiet, and far too abandoned for that emotion to be honest. And then he sees a girl standing in the middle of the highway. She’s wearing a seifuku, a typical Japanese schoolgirls outfit, but she isn’t a typical Japanese schoolgirl. She’s still, unresponsive, and...

Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch is a series of essays where Willow Maclay will be covering the streaming release of Hideaki Anno’s landmark anime show. We’re all doomed. That’s the prediction at least, with explicit assurances of what will happen if we don’t do everything in our power to stop global warming. Some of us grapple with this threat more severely than others, but with each new climate report being released from expert scientists our ability to stay optimistic about the future of our planet becomes more difficult. The sequel-heavy and reboot centric output of the North American studio system that has become common as Disney’s monopolization has taken hold largely does not grapple with these concerns in any significant way. The end goal of current mainstream cinema is to make money through the reassurance that we can be saved through the superheroics of characters like Captain America,...

After years of being legally unavailable outside of Japan, the classic anime series finally makes its way to Netflix worldwide.
Get streaming on Netflix, Shinji! For being one of the most beloved and influential anime series of all time, Neon Genesis Evangelion has been nearly impossible to track down legally for years. While the series is constantly referenced in best of lists and scholarly articles, if you didn't live in Japan and weren't willing to pay high prices for DVDs or Blu-rays, you would not be able to get the classic series.
Netflix is about to change all that. It's been announced that Evangelion will begin streaming worldwide on June 21, 2019. They also released a video with the date and a kickass montage.
Congratulations! Neon Genesis Evangelion hits @Netflix 6.21. pic.twitter.com/hyUlgGpW26
