Chaplin captures the true essence of American Immigration in the Immigrant. Introducing a scene with great hope and promise and then turning it into a moment of misfortune as the scene takes 180 degree turn from purity to crap. The Immigrants are looked as cattle being shipped to a port. Chaplin stirs a "crap storm" by showing this to a 1917 audience to get a quick laugh out of the rich. Well, on second thought, maybe that's how genius works?
