A well acted but over-ambitious film
20 December 1998
The film was based on a good storyline, well-acted but over- ambitious in trying to cover too wide a time span. The cast of well-known and established actors and actresses did as could be expected and gave the film a high profile. I think they were wasted. For example the minor part played by Antonia Banderous did little for the actor or the film.

Although I have not read the book I suspect the film was a poor adaption. Not enough was made of the so-called powers of the main character played by Meryl Streep. The film lost its way but although I saw it on television it was worth the time spent watching it. My message to film makers adapting from books is to add value to the story through visual interpretation rather than detract through poor character representation. Overall not a bad film
