Tollbooth (1994)
6/10
Determinedly weird black comedy...
21 July 2001
Tollbooth worker near Miami tracks down his girlfriend's long-lost father, only to get into a fight with the guy and have the whole situation blow up in his face. "Tollbooth" is peculiar, certainly, but also nostalgic--an interesting mix. What with its lazy-hazy ambiance and eclectic cast, the film seems determinedly non-commercial (which can be both pro and con). Lenny Von Dohlan is terrific in the lead, plus it's always good to see Fairuza Balk and Louise Fletcher. Like most films about dead-end lives, however, this one doesn't have any particular place to go. There are pleasurable moments along the way, thanks to writer-director Salomé Breziner's canny touches and offbeat style. The definition of a movie sleeper. **1/2 from ****
