Review of Phoenix

Phoenix (1998)
7/10
good gritty cop thriller
17 June 1999
A good gritty cop thriller, where the interesting thing is that everyone in the movie is corrupt or flawed in some way. It reminded me of Copland with Sly Stallone, but much grittier and darker than that, and probably better. Everyone is full of greed, double-crossing, pulling their own angles, and the redeeming thing is that everyone gets what they deserve in one way or another. Ray Liota tries to be upbeat about his life and future, but events just keep dragging him down, mostly of his own making. And there are some good dark laughs which keeps it from being depressing. You won't be depressed anyway, not one of them gets your sympathy, except maybe Ray. >
