Fifty years from now, people are going to wonder what the Academy was thinking. I was astonished how the award could go to someone who played a role so short and un-meaty. I suspect the Academy gave Kidman residual credit for her much more spectacular role in "Moulin Rouge" - and sympathy credit for her messy personal divorce. Every Best Actor(ess) performance should have a moment that particularly sticks in the mind. What did this performance have?
Not to mention the fact this is a story about four self-absorbed characters who live their life in slow motion and who never manage to explain to overworked, over-hocked slobs such as myself why we should care about them. Even the Julianne Moore character, who I found the most interesting, was still a stereotypical suffocated 50s housewife, which she played more fully in "Far From Heaven." I'm not surprised that "Hours" garnered the many disappointed reviews on this site.
End Note: Did the Academy voters even bother to see "Frida?"
