Wild Zero (1999)
"ROCK and ROLL!!!"

Warning: Spoilers
~Spoiler~

Wild Zero is best looked at as an Asian, Troma-esque genre-blender with a budget. We've got aliens, zombies, evil promoters, a love story that knows no genders, gratuitous hair combing, and Guitar Wolf (an Asian rockabilly/Ramones type band). The plot is too much for me to even get into, but I assure you that you will not be bored (and if you do, the DVD has a drinking game). The best parts are the wildly animated characters and the zombies. Guitar Wolf, Bass Wolf, and Drum Wolf define cool while the evil promoter guy is one of the funniest looking characters ever. He has a Prince Valiant hairstyle and wears these ridiculous short shorts that tie up the side. The zombie make-up and gore effects were quite good and the head explosions, while you could tell they were computer generated, were still "wow" inducing. Much of the film doesn't make any sense, but then again it's not supposed to. This one has got the tongue firmly planted in the cheek. But Guitar Wolf unsheathing a sword from his guitar and slicing an alien spacecraft in two makes for a great image. So, if you take anything away from this film let it be the message that "love has no borders, nationalities, or genders!" I probably wouldn't buy Wild Zero, but I definitely feel cooler for having seen it.
