"Humongous" is a really awesome 1982 horror film, the cast like Janet Julian(Sandy), Page Fletcher(Tom), and David Wallace(Eric) is really superb.
The film starts out on Labor Day weekend in 1946 on an island owned by the Parsons family who are having a party. Ida, who is the daughter is minding her own business till a man named Tom comes up to Ida and bothers her.She walks off to the beach and Tom follows Ida. He ends up raping her. The dogs in the fence are going nuts,they jump out of fence and run to help Ida, they tear up Tom really good. Ida takes a big tree branch and kills Tom by hitting him over the head. Ida looks up in a blank stare.
It is 36 years later, Eric Simmons is going boating with his brother Nick, sister Carla, and 2 female friends Sandy and Donna. Nick is the mean and horny guy who won't leave Donna alone.They all leave for their boat trip. Later on that night, a man on a boat lights a flare and warns them to slow down cause of the rocks underneath.The man they save is Bert, a man who's boats engine went out. He tells them they are near an island which he calls "Dog Island" cause of the dogs there.
Later that night, Nick decides to move the boat and the boat hits the rocks, they all abandon ship and make it to the island, Bert broke his leg.They are shipwrecked,but Carla is missing.Nick decides to go up to the lodge to get help. Unknown to them, they are being watched by a big deformed man. Nick hears a dog, nick runs fast and one of the dogs is running after him till the big giant man who ends up killing the dog by strangling him,Nick runs to a boat house and hides in it, he thinks he hears a dog. It is the giant, who crashes in the door, Nick screams and becomes the first human victim of the giant.
The next morning, Eric goes to look for Nick,Sandy tags along. Donna stays with Bert, Eric and Sandy go to the boat house and they find Carla, she is alive. Eric, Carla and Sandy go up to the lodge to find out a few things. Nick is no where to be seen. Meanwhile, Donna is comforting Bert, not knowing the mutant is there,Donna tries to warm Bert up, they hear a growling noise, it is the giant, he breaks Donna's neck and breaks Bert's with his foot. At the lodge, Sandy, Eric and Carla find a picture book and make a shocking discovery,a rotted corpse on the chair,it is Ida Parsons. They are frightened of the corpse.They 3 go up stairs and look in the rooms for things.They hear a noise through the vents, it is the mutant.
The 3 go outside to the basement, and see a made up shrine, and find a diary there, they smell a bad stench. They go to a room and really make a horrifying discovery, Nick and Donna hanged on chains, dead. Carla runs really fast out the door, she runs to the beach and sees Bert's head floating in the water.
Later that night, Eric and Sandy learn more and find out who it is that killed the dogs, and Nick, Donna, and Bert. He is the son of Ida Parsons. Ida taught his son to protect the island and left him with the message, "the outside people are the enemy". They also discover that he was eating the dogs for food.
Eric has an idea to burn the lodge so that a boat near by can see them and rescue them. Sandy dropped the matches and the have to go the the lodge to get them. Eric and Sandy go and she finds them and they hear a noise,it is Ida's son. Eric looks through a hole in the door of the basement, the giant looks through, and breaks down the door. Eric manages to hit him with a big branch to knock him down.Eric thought he killed him, but he didn't, the mutant is alive, he hits Eric a couple of times and picks Eric up and wraps his arms around Eric and breaks Eric's back, Sandy is powerless to help Eric. The mutant takes Eric's corpse outside and lays his body on the ground, Eric is dead. Sandy runs up stairs and sees the photo of Ida. Sandy wraps a big blanket around her self over her head and pretends to be Ida, so the mutant will go away. As soon as Sandy goes out the door of the bedroom, he is there and chases Sandy out of the lodge and and runs to the boat house, Carla is there, she was looking for Sandy. The mutant is behind them and grabs Carla by the face and crushes her head, and kills her. He is now after Sandy. Sandy strikes a match and causes the boathouse to burn. The mutant is catching on fire, Sandy escapes and she thinks she is safe, till he comes out of the water and chases her. She runs up the wooden steps with the mutant following her. Sandy pulls a sign from the ground to use as a weapon and ends up stabbing him with it. He falls to the ground, dead. The boat house goes up in flames.
Sandy is the only survivor of the island, she sits on the dock with the same face that Ida Parsons made 36 years ago.
This film is really great, the only bad thing was that the movie was too dark, literally. The picture could have been brighter so you could have seen the mutant's face better. I give this movie 10/10 stars and 2 thumbs up.
