weird king kong spoof with many toys
3 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is not so bad as many let believe. Mind you, end credits show: 1967. Of course today, after seven dozens of Bond & Bond-like movies, plus 9999 sci-fi/fantastic movies we can say we've seen pretty much anything, thus this movie looks a bit weird. In perspective it wasn't so bad, nor so outdated. Bond stuff was rather new at the time, hence the Bond sets, the villain scientist out to conquer the world with henchmen dressing all alike, in cahoots with a sexy Asian spy woman from an undisclosed financing country. Then we've a trio of perfectly 60ish heroes: the macho captain (a Bond-like character ), the pretty (cute she was indeed) blond nurse in love with the Japanese first mate. Then we have a remote island, a frantic islander, dinosaurs, the villains out to get Kong for some dirty deed, men in suit wrestling each other and another TOHO cliché: a robot similar to King Kong, long before the 1970's mechagodzillas. Another reason why such movie looks outdated & ridiculous, yet it isn't per se. Of course there are many scenes with toys (too many ), the acting isn't much of anything and the plot is torn between one's classic monster movie and some Bond movie/spy story. Not the worst monster movie. of course it's a spoof of the 1933 KK movie, thus comparisons shall end unfavourably. a nice movie for a quiet evening.
