Shopgirl (2005)
7/10
Steve Martin Film entertaining, and certainly surprising storyline
5 November 2006
I caught this movie on Starz. I did not know that Steve Martin wrote it till after I watched it. It wasn't the best movie I have seen. The female lead was rather plain looking, and was the gorgeous woman who usually has a story wind around her and her life. She works in a high class dept store. This young woman was bored, and seemed to never find "Mr. Right". Can anyone? She had a long line of no shows, and ones that just petered out, or fly by nights. When she is in the laundromat she meets a man who is just so grungy and disgusting, and strange, but she doesn't want to miss out on a gem of a guy, so she allows him to invade her boring world. She is so desperate she even gives him her phone number and tries to see if he is the one. The guy is nice, but just such a slob. She meets Steve Martin who is just looking for someone to be with when he is town. A chauvinist who gives her presents but not his heart. I thought I might be watching Pretty Woman because of the premise of the gifts and the relationship, the only difference she was not a call girl. She fell for him, and he just did not care. It took a long time for her to finally realize it was better to be alone then to be with the wrong someone. The ending is really surprising as she finds out what it is she really wants and needs in her life. I liked the film, but not so much that I would like to own it.
