This series was even translated into Swedish and ran on Swedish cable during the late 80's.

Its about a Spanish orphan called Estoban, who meets a man who claim to be the one who saved him from his drowning fathers arms in a shipwreck on a voyage to the new world and the mysterious cities of gold. He also tells Estoban that his father had been to these cities, and that the medallion Estoban is the matching half of the one he is bearing himself (he split it when he saved Estoban who was only in infant at the time), and that it carries the secrets, perhaps even to the fate of his father.

This is the reason for Estoban to go on a ship to the new world and meet new friends and race the Spanish authorities for the cities of gold, as well as he is trying to figure out the fate of his lost father.

on his journey he teams up with a local Inca girl, and a boy who is the last of a lost hi-tech-civilization.

At the end of each episode there was some piece of trivia to the old cultures of south America and/or the Spanish voyages related to the conquering of the Inca empire.

In my opinion it gets a little out of hand at the end of the series, when they introduce a culture called "the Omecks" an alien-like race that dwell in the ruins if lost Inca cities and kind of take some of their legacy, but they still play an important part of the story.
