Review of Ponderosa

Ponderosa (2001–2002)

Waste of a good idea

Warning: Spoilers
This could have been so good. A show about the Cartwrights before Bonanza, before Joe grew up, before Hop sing was hired. This could have been interesting. A treat to watch how it all happened. How Eric got his nickname of "Hoss". How Joe became "Little". How the last Mrs Cartwright, Little Joe's mother, died. How they came to own their famous home. Bonanza fans wondered about all of these things.

Each event was worthy of a story of it's own. This is a tale that was meant to unfold gradually. The trouble is, all that was done in a badly acted and sappy pilot. I don't know if mentioning that is an actual spoiler, but I thought it fair to warn.

Joe's mother calls him 'Petite' which means little, so he becomes Little Joe to his dismay. He has a new horse that bites Eric on his seat and soon it's said she branded him "Hoss".

Speaking of Joe's mother, her death might have been sadder had it not meant the end of that cartoon like French accent. I wanted her dead by her second scene.

Naturally, someone gives Ben 160 acres of land. Gosh, what shall we name this land of ours? Hey Paw, what are them there pine trees called? Why Ponderosa Pines, my son. Why, let us call it Ponderosa, and I will write it on this familiar looking map that will soon be on fire.

The first disc, that I rented from Netflix, also has the second episode. It wasn't any better. I canceled the rest.
