More horrible than horror
9 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
You don't get 2 minutes into the actual movie before you realize this is supposed to be a military operation written by people who have no clue what they are doing. We are introduced to an allegedly 'elite' team in which one of the vets is pointing his gun persistently at the 'rookie' on the team to tease him. Such acts of stupidity are not tolerated among those familiar with guns, let alone the military, let alone an elite unit. Not only that, but we have a mixed team with women wearing makeup and everybody is smarting off and ignoring orders, and back-talking.

Throughout the film people are wandering off aimlessly, pursuing hallucinations repeatedly (are they incapable of learning?), firing wildly, and whining pointlessly. Gooding does little to maintain discipline or control, and is subjected to constant and repetitive flashbacks that show the same scene over and over with little variation.

After a brief interval you are mostly wondering if anyone can be this stupid. Throw in a lot of gore, brief but unenticing nudity, a lesbian undercurrent and a bunch of religious mumbo jumbo and call it a wrap.

I disagree with those who thought Gooding did a good job of acting. He seemed to be walking around in a daze and he was supposed to be the leader. Completely unconvincing. And for that matter so was everyone else.

I've seen worse movies, but not many. Unless you must see it on a dare or because you want to see every last religious horror flick or Gooding, you are better off passing this one up. It just isn't worth the time.
