Evocative of a two hankie weeper of the mid '40s. Lady Susan Ashwood(Irene Dunne)is working as a Red Cross nurse waiting for a large number of wounded to arrive from WWII and hoping not to see her son John II(Peter Lawford)among them. Susan came to England for a two week visit in 1914 and fell in love with a British Army officer Sir John Ashwood(Alan Marshal). The couple are hardly married when Sir John is called to join his troop and enters the first World War, where he is killed in action not knowing he was to have a son. To her dismay, Susan will in deed end up tending to their son, another victim from another war. This movie is based on the poem by Alice Duer Miller. A well rounded supporting cast featuring: Frank Morgan, C. Aubrey Smith, Gladys Cooper, Van Johnson and Dame May Witty. Smaller roles are played by: J. Pat O'Malley, June Lockhart and the young Roddy McDowell and Elizabeth Taylor.
