Review of Lilyhammer

Lilyhammer (2012–2014)
7/10
Enjoyable but with reservations

Warning: Spoilers
OK, I enjoyed this made for TV via Netflix via Norway production at least partly because I greatly enjoy Little Stevie Van Zandt whether here or in the Sopranos.

I won't rehash what others have said here about the plot - it's supposed to be a fish out of water, but in many ways, it turns into bull in china shop. This is what bothered me a bit about this show - the main character doesn't even pretend to try to fit into his host nation - one he specifically requested being shipped to. Instead, after a few days, he starts taking names and kicking ass.

Add to this that Van Zandt is a main character so, just as if this were a Tom Cruise vehicle, things just have to fall into place for him time after time. No matter what obstacle he faces, it falls to his NY style aggression or plain good luck.

Mild Spoiler

**************

For example, on one train trip, he saves an old guy from being slightly roughed up. As it turns out, this old guy happens to be just the guy who shows up when Van Zandt needs an official to turn a blind eye to his illegal activities. In addition, the whole save an old guy incident is witnessed by a Norse hottie roughly 25 years younger than Van Zandt which causes him to acquire a girlfriend in this hottie.

Sure...the best looking chick in "Lilyhammer" just happens to fall for some alien bully who is old enough to be her dad. Well, maybe I'm not much up on what Norse chicks want.

Give it a try. By Episode 2 you will either be hooked or repelled. I was hooked despite the comments above. I look forward to season 2.
