Cracked (2013–2014)

review after first six episodes

Warning: Spoilers
Not sure what the several low reviews were about. This is not a Sopranos or Dexter type show. Instead, it is a more typical mainstream show.

Spoiler Alert: I reference the last few shows of the first season shown in the US these last few weeks.

Of course there is a man and woman and possible romance brewing in the background. That's life; people attract people. If you took all the shows off the air that suggested a possible romance between two main characters you would take 75 percent of the shows off the air. The test will be to see how they bring any romance along, not whether the show has a possible romance.

The acting is fine. I agree the two partners who are not the central focus are a bit thin on character. Right now, they just sort of get sent off to do this or that, and we really know nothing about them at all. I think they should use this couple and flesh them out as real people and bring them along. Let's not just have the main pair the only detailed characters. Let's use these two actors and make them characters the audience can loved. We need the other male lead, who is a psychiatric nurse, to have some relationship with the male lead. Let's see the other female actor get a relationship. If nothing else, she can approach the other woman for some psychiatric advice. Maybe she has a bad boyfriend or something or a sister with a bad boyfriend and the whole gang can get involved in some way. The writers need to watch a few shows known for their ensemble characters a try to broaden out these characters and their relationships to one another.

I think the tension is good here. Male cop suffering from post traumatic stress but too closed as a person to face up to it. Sure it has been done, so the questions is how they handle it, not whether it is totally unique. The male actor is playing it more as a depression he won't admit rather than as a Mel Gibson-esque lunacy. No problem with that. The female actress has her own issue in her background. Perhaps I am obtuse, but I do think that her being on the edge over a death that was more than a decade ago is a bit much, but maybe I am not in touch with the reality of such a situation. If that is the case, my apology. I thought in one recent episode I saw (where the postpartum mother leaves the baby) that the actors did a nice job. Yeah, the male actor's supposed press blunder when he acted out in front of the news camera was not so dramatic an outburst it could have gotten him in trouble. (Personally I liked what he said) The last episode about the rock star who was unstable was moving, IMO. I really like the fact they are tackling mental illness and doing so in a sensitive way.

Give this show and the people some time to grow and see what they come up with! It could be better, yes, but it is certainly not bad. Lots of potential here with main characters I think we can grow to like and care about if they let us inside.
