Yo Banana Boy!!!
18 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I never did trust bananas... Wow. Now this was just the weirdest! It's all about the awakening of some kind of ancient demonic curse that turns all bananas and banana-related foodstuffs throughout the world into bloodthirsty little monsters!!! It's about a killer banana apocalypse yo! What kind of warped minds would ever care to dream up such a thing!? It's a gleefully stupid idea that is done in the near-cheapest way possible, but damn if they don't manage to make it work in just the right way! It's all so freaking exaggerated and nuts, but it's done with such an energy and enthusiasm to it that I couldn't help but get a little buzz off it and get carried away with the madcap atmosphere and fun spirit of it. This is exactly the kind of low-budget schlocky comic horror that can only ever really work in the short film format, I reckon. I mean it can be done, but this level of tongue-in-cheek B-movie trashy fun is extremely hard to maintain in a full-length feature. It's a little slow and boring at first, but soon picks up once the bananas start attacking! It's even funnier because let's face it, they do kinda look like cocks! I love all the well detailed over-the-top cartoon gore effects that reminded me of what you'd get in the better efforts from Troma Studios. It's so completely ridiculous, I mean how would bananas even be physically capable of inflicting all those gruesome injuries on the people? They don't have any sharp teeth, or even any serious edges to speak of and - oh god, I can't believe I'm delving into such an absurd subject! It's something that I seriously thought would never come up.. The absolute most hilarious part for me is the outrageous scene where a very excited nerdy guy is using a dirty chatroom and the girl he's watching gets offed by a banana and he stands up in shock and exposes himself, and then the camera switches to a banana's point of view as from far away it hysterically homes in on his rear end!!! The shot is so gross and just has to be seen to be believed! Another added element that I really enjoyed about this were the references to numerous classic horror movies, like Alien, Cannibal Holocaust, King Kong, Terminator, a variation of the theme music from either Cape Fear or Halloween, I wasn't sure, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Jaws, The Thing, Evil Dead, and I know it's not a horror movie, but they definitely aped the famous scene from the Indiana Jones movie where the Arc of the Covenent melts the Nazi's faces. That part was awesome! I loved this short it was fast, funny and entertaining. And, it is actually even more crazier than it sounds! Very appealing..
