In the Blood (I) (2014)

Not quite a comeback for Gina Carano after last year
9 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The story tells about Ava, a girl who was brought up harsh by her criminal father, and Derek who just got married and is going on vacation in a Caribbean island. One night, the couple got into trouble with locals at a club, and the next day, while on a zip-line, Derek got an accident and fell. An ambulance comes and takes him to hospital, but the ambulance guys don't let Ava ride with them. At the hospital, Derek is nowhere to be found. She then looks for him at other hospitals and eventually goes to the police.

The police shuts her down. She then acts on her own by tracking back from the zip-line spot. She is able to get assistance from Manny, the guy who took them to the zip-line in the first place. With Manny she managed to track down the culprits and found that the police chief is in bed with them too. The police chief tells her about the doctor who kidnaps Derek and that Derek is dead. After getting payback from the police chief, she then pays the doctor a visit.

At the hospital, it turn out that Derek still lives. He is being held captive as an involuntary donor of bone marrow by Silvio, a local gangster who has a rare type of cancer. Ava rescues him, and they are chased by Silvio. The rest is the couple's struggle to evade and escape Silvio, with Manny's help.

Gina Carano isn't doing well enough after her big break in last year's "Fast & Furious 6", so I thought this movie might be a good comeback for her. Cam Gigandet also suffers quite the same fate after his breakthrough in the first "Twilight" movie. Though maybe Cam has been able to fare better by being able to release a comedy movie more recently, "Bad Johnson".

After some story build, about 15 minutes into the movie, the action starts. It's a typical bar/club fight scene, one protagonist against many, but this time it's a chick in a semi-gown dress who's doing the kicking. There is also suspense thriller action on the zip-lines. Overall the fight scenes are good. But they are not good as in having good fight moves rather they are well executed close-up takes.

Well, Gina Carano doesn't really succeeded in changing careers to the movies industry. Her acting doesn't really cover the non-action parts well enough. The photography direction is so tight on a budget or it's just lame, the angle on shots of persons driving a car in taken directly from the passenger seat.

The story base is good, and it is built well up to the point where Derek is missing. But the development of the middle section of the movie is just plainly lame. On the initial parts up to about the middle of the movie's length, the story is kind of lacking behind, having too many cool-down scenes and action scenes which are not long enough to be thrilling, The story builds much better up on the latter parts. The pace picks up better. The screenplay depicts Ava's character way better than expected of a girl brought up harsh by her own father. The chase and evasion sequence near the finale are great, they keep the thrill and suspense beside the action.

Danny Trejo's character is almost of no relevance to the movie as a whole up until the very end. On the contrary, Amaury Nolasco's character, which is of greater importance, is not well developed up until the extensive duration of his appearance on about the last 30% of the movie. There are also many thing that are not making sense logically, like Derek's foot being broken sideways but he can still limp without screaming his pain, and even fighting one of his pursuers, while escaping Silvio.

All those points make the movie somehow look like an indie movie. Having experienced actors such as Danny Trejo, Luiz Guzman and Amaury Nolasco doesn't really make the breakthrough for this movie. So for all those, I'm giving this movie a 5 out of 10 score. A recommendation is definitely a no from me.
