Review of The Watch

The Watch (I) (2012)
7/10
Funny despite Hollywood contrivances

Warning: Spoilers
The cast do a great job fulfilling their roles in this film with Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn playing up to their strengths in this assemble cast of comedy actors. The two standouts however are Richard Ayoade and Jonah Hill who bring a breath of fresh air to the quartet. Especially Ayoade who brings a sense of unknowing to his role to those unfamiliar to his work. The problems don't stem with the humour or casting choices it is where typical plot devices are thrown in and typical Hollywood rears it's head. Saying that in this movie it seems to fit the style and the overall story in that it explains why characters act the way they do. Ben Stiller's Evan and his wife are trying to have a baby but can't because he is sterile. So it is reasonable to expect him to over compensate by being deflective and aloof. Yeah it has a Hollywood stench over it but it actually is believable. Vince Vaughn's character is concerned over his daughter and explains his motivation to join the watch. More contrived than the other story but still has a basis in reality. At times the plot is predictable but does pleasantly surprise as well. Overall, not a master piece but it has a lot of funny moments and is worth a watch.
