Promoting Dystopia: Rendering the Poster Art (2007)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

The poster and promotional material of BLADE RUNNER is discussed in this 10-minute featurette that features interviews with John Alvin and Drew Struzan. This is one of the more interesting aspects of the special features for the film because a lot of people have forgotten that at one point posters were a very important part of selling a film. We get to see some of the posters and promotional pieces that were made for the Ridley Scott film. We not only get the American stuff but also various versions of the poster that were released overseas. Alvin even talks about how different things were created in different locations depending on what needed to be sold there. We then get to hear from Struzan who talks about some of his drawings that weren't used when the film was originally released but then he got a call from Scott who wanted to use them for the DVD. This here is another very entertaining piece and this here actually works best not in regards to BLADE RUNNER but just how the creativity of posters has pretty much gone away in favor of Photoshop and things that don't have to be as creative.
