Fitoor, based on the popular Charles Dicken's novel "The Great Expectation" , was an emotional love story that could have been crafted better but unfortunately was mowed down by weak direction and poor script. What could have profound impact but turned to be a big boring flick.
Fitoor tells the story of of 3 people – Noor (played by Aditya Roy Kapoor) who falls in love with his muse (played by Tabu)'s daughter Firdaus (played by Katrina Kaif) in his childhood. As they grow up, Noor becomes more obsessed with Firdaus and is willing to do anything to get her. However, Begum, who is broken-hearted from a failed marriage, plots a retribution on their love story.
Now , I have been a big fan of "The Great Expectations" and adore the characters of Pip and Estella ( respectively played by Aditya Roy Kapoor and Katrina Kaif) and was expecting the same heart- warming, emotional touching love story this time. To my surprise, I was disappointed with this film. The third attempt by Abhishek Kapoor after Rock On and Kai Po Che, Fitoor could have made you laugh, cry, thrilled, excited and inspired but is welcomed by a saddened script. Even though Abhishek Kapoor had wonderful story to tell, but the lethargic pace and superficial drama could not salvage the film from falling into the pit. There is no chemistry between Aditya Roy Kapoor and Katrina Kaif except for their lip-lock. Whenever they meet, it always seems so over the top. I like the enigmatic cinematography(Anay Goswamy) capturing the essence of Kashmir embedded with fantastic art direction (Mayur Sharma).
Never the less , the film is full of loopholes and boring drama which sometimes makes you scratch your hair. Background score and editing is decent. Both Aditya Roy Kapoor and Katrina Kaif are hopeless. I wish, casting some strong performers would have made the film watchable. The only silver lining in this dull film is superb acting by Tabu. She gets into the character of depressed and disturbed old lady. Watch for her where she ask her daughter if she wants to be like her mother marrying a person beneath her status. Another highlight of the film is the soulful music by Amit Trivedi.
So , overall , a golden opportunity gone wasted . Rather than concentrating on making the film look good, Abhishek Kapoor could have made sincere efforts in the direction and screenplay area
