Batman: The Clock King Gets Crowned (1966)
Season 2, Episode 12

Walter Slezak not a memorable arch villain

"The Clock King Gets Crowned" sees the Dynamic Duo toppling their hour glass prison, rolling along the floor until it shatters. What they don't know is that Aunt Harriet (Madge Blake) plans a special birthday present for Bruce Wayne, a trick antique clock bugged by Clock King, enabling him to invade Wayne Manor for its priceless collection of pocket watches. Second Hand Three (Michael Pate) confesses that he misplaced the Atomic Energy Directional Control Switch, now residing in Aunt Harriet's clock, which must be retrieved before the big caper can be pulled off. Imagine Batman wondering where to find Clock King, who at that very moment is upstairs in Wayne Manor! There would be another episode to satirize the era of pretentious artists with "Pop Goes the Joker"/"Flop Goes the Joker." Despite the multi talented Walter Slezak spoofing his villainous image, he's not a memorable arch criminal, making one long for Michael Pate to have played the part! (perhaps this was the role the producers had in mind for a visiting Christopher Lee, in the midst of his Dracula and Fu Manchu series). There would be worse episodes yet to come, while this one intrigues with the involvement of longtime Batman contributor Bill Finger on board. Batman: "I find it only fitting that Clock King, who made time serve his crimes, must now serve time himself!"
