Attitude!
13 July 2016
The legacy of Twisted Sister has long inspired me. What legacy, you ask? A legacy of talent, perseverance, and believing in oneself. Growing up, all of my peers, even those in to rock, metal, guitars, etc, looked down on my affinity for Twisted. They were viewed as a gimmicky joke band, and that's understandable given their popular videos, overexposure, and poor decisions post-Stay Hungry. To a passive fan or bystander, why take them seriously? But the Twisted Sister I loved is all here in this excellent documentary on the days, I mean, years, before success. We Are Twisted F**king Sister - the title itself sets the tone. This is band's self introduction to every show, and the balls-out attitude that made them fierce. I've long known the stories and struggles and it is awesome to see the real footage from their early days. What's redeeming is friends have sought out the film on their own and reported that they loved it, that they learned lots, and developed a new respect for the band and their achievements. What makes WATFS work are not only the great anecdotes and extensive archives, but the story itself. It is a Rocky narrative - fighting against the odds, painful setbacks, and a hunger for success. The director himself wasn't even a fan when he began this project. That's how powerful their story is. Both the fight to survive and thrive and the humorous perspective of the band is compelling. It's worth it.
