Venus in Fur (2013)
7/10
When script becomes reality

Warning: Spoilers
Though "Venus in fur" deals with the concept of sexuality a lot, it is by no means based on cheap erotic. Rather, it unravels the mysterious story of a mysterious woman, appearing seemingly out of the nowhere, having deeper knowledge than she pretends and turning the evening of a posh director upside down.

It is of course not the first film in which a play becomes reality, there are several examples, some of which are even more prominent and better known to a wider audience. Yet this approach still has a lot of potential for me and I enjoy it time and again to witness the process. It should be pointed out that in this case the whole film is carried by just two actors, a fact even more puzzling because you don't have a feeling at any time that there should be more involved.

Many details are left open in the end. Who is this woman and where does she have her knowledge and equipment from? Is she lying or telling the truth? Which role does the director's wife play? Some might consider it tiring that so much remains unexplained but for once I actually enjoyed ending on a mystery. I don't have a lot of knowledge about Polanski's films, since this is just the second one I've ever seen from him. But I have to say that after the first one really disappointed me, this one gives him back credit as a filmmaker.
