Halloween isn't a quiet as predicted

Early on it is stated that Halloween is actually a rather quiet time for the supernatural… of course this year will be an exception. Buffy, Willow and Xander have been volunteered by Principal Snyder to supervise young children as they trick or treat… costumes are not optional. They all head to a new costume shop and pick out something to wear; Buffy is particularly keen on an eighteenth century style dress that she is sure Angel will like. Xander decides to go as a soldier and Willow originally wears a rather sexy costume but ultimately chickens out and wears a ghost costume over it. What they don't realise is that Ethan Rayne, the shopkeeper, is going to perform a ritual and then everybody wearing anything bought at his shop will become the thing they are dressed as! Spike hears what is going on and quickly it is chaos in Sunnydale. Most people seem to have no idea who they really are; Willow becomes a ghost of herself, in the sexy costume, so can remember as well as now being able to walk through walls. Cordelia is unaffected as well as she brought her costume elsewhere. It later emerges that Giles and Ethan knew each other in the past as he struggles to break the spell before a helpless Buffy can be killed by the vampires.

This was a great episode for many reasons; we have Buffy and Willow trying to find out about Angel, Cordelia's reaction to being told that Angel is a vampire, hints that Giles had a rather dark past and Oz noticing Willow again… although it is hardly surprising what she was wearing at the time. Willow has always been such a quiet character so it was fun seeing her growing more confident at the end of the episode as she doesn't bother keeping her ghost costume on and goes with the sexy costume she wore when she really was a ghost; a costume that made her look stunning without quite being indecent. It was great to see Spike and Drusilla again even if Ethan is the main villain. It was interesting to see Buffy being the most vulnerable character when thinks went wrong… mostly because it made her return to normal all the more awesome. Overall a memorable episodes for all the right reasons.
