Dante's Lunch (2017)
4/10
A dog and his bone
17 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Dante's Lunch: A Short Tail" is a really short animated movie from 2017. It runs for under 2 minutes and is basically an additional appetizer for the new Pixar movie Coco that will come out later this year. Normally they do the short films after the feature and include them as DVD/BluRay addition, which could very well happen to this one too, but here they give us an early taste of the canine protagonist from Coco. Sadly, I found it really underwhelming. The plot is basically that the bone has no business getting caught by Dante, the dog in here. Now I am a bit confused as I see the dog's name is called Hector. Oh well, I am sure things will get clearer at the latest when Coco is released. Anyway, the title of my review could actually also be "A bone and his dog" as the bone is extremely resilient and resistant. A wild chase sequence ensues that is not really creative or funny though, but just very fast and wild like I already said. The plot twist with the bone's owner at the very end was maybe the best thing about this little movie and also shows that Coco is probably not set in a world like the one we live in. And it makes really a nice parallel as to some extent the bone is a metaphor for a dog as well, a lost dog running to find his owner. At least that's what came to my mind. As the first 90 seconds were really forgettable though compared to the very end I give this one a thumbs-down. What we see in here is nothing other than what Disney and MGM and Warner Bros did 75-80 years ago already in cartoons and certainly not worse. I truly hope Pixar steps things up a lot for the full feature film.
