Tummy Trouble (1989) - Too many cooks

"Tummy Trouble" is a Roger Rabbit 8-minute short film from over 25 years ago, the first one actually I believe. Unfortunately, this one does not even come close to Bugs Bunny's finest short films. This one here is much more crass and in your face, but it also does forget to be actually funny while being very loud. This is the first directorial effort from Rob Minkoff ("The Lion King", "Stuart Little") and it's safe to say that he stepped up his game a lot as his career progressed. Not even the inclusion of Droopy or the fact that Walt Disney worked on this short film here as well could make it a good watch. It was obviously a very prestigious project, but the outcome is just disappointing. The mix of live action and animation (the big strength of Roger Rabbit) was only included very briefly at the end and was still by far the best thing about this movie. Everything before it pretty much sucked. Not recommended. Also, how do 6 writers work on a film that does not even run for 8 minutes. Classic example of too many cooks spoiling the broth.

Roller Coaster Rabbit (1990) - Wild? Yes. Fun? Not really.

"Roller Coaster Rabbit" is the second from three Roger Rabbot short films they made roughly 25 years ago. It runs for eight minutes and has Roger take care of Baby Herman again. And of course he needs to rescue Jessica. Sadly, without success, but luckily Droopy is around as well. This film, just like the first, relies on a mix of animation and live action again, but to me it feels like a copy of the first that I also did not enjoy that much. I see the lead actor's name is Fleischer, but I am not sure if he is related to Max or Dave. Anyway, he is far away from their best as Roger's voice in here is one of the main reasons why I did not like this film. And apart from that, they could not come up with a different story this time than saving Baby Herman again? Yes there is a raging bull in here and some trigger-happy amusement park visitors, but still.. It's all a bit repetitive and not really creative. Not recommended.

Trail Mix-Up (1993) - Repetitive and uninteresting, magic's gone

Then again the magic was never really there as I did not like the two short films before this one either. Still, this third and final little movie "Trail Mix-Up", which runs for 9 minutes is probably the weakest from the trio. I cannot believe they still did not come up with anything other than Roger trying to save the baby and in the end he enters the real world and causes mayhem there with the baby actor having a deep criminal voice. Speaking about deep voices, "Jessica Rabbit" sounds like she has been chain smoking for 30 years. Really unattractive and Oscar nominee Kathleen Turner may not have been a great choice for her. Steven Spielberg produced this stinker, so nobody's perfect i guess. They tried to make the cartoon comedy retro-style, but it never reached the charm of these very old cartoons. Not recommended and glad the series ended after this one. You're not missing much.
