Forty eight days previously...

When 'Lost' was in its prime, it was must-watch television. Remember first watching it, found it remarkably easy to get into, was hooked from the start and was on Season 3 by the end of one week. The general consensus is that the final season is a disappointment and cannot disagree.

"The Other 48 Days" is often considered one of the best 'Lost' episodes. Not only think that it is a high-point of Season 2 and one of the best episodes of 'Lost' up to this point, but also have to agree that it is one of the show's best. Everything is brilliantly done and personally wouldn't change a thing about it.

It's a unique episode, as noted, for not including any conventional personal life flashbacks. Instead focusing entirely on on-island events as one big flashback story detailing the story of the tail end survivors from forty eight days previously. This worked brilliantly, and this way we got to know the tail end survivors properly early on and see the season's on-going main plot line from their viewpoint. There is a positive vibe set immediately by one of the show's best ever opening sequences (truly magnificent), and the story never loses its rich tension or mysterious intrigue.

A great job is done with the writing and development of the characters thanks to a taut, smart, passionate and complex script that has a lot happening while not feeling over-stuffed.

On a visual level, "The Other 48 Days" is beautifully photographed, as always making the most of the island setting. The music is as always chilling and understated and some of the show's best direction, containing some particularly wonderful photography in the opening.

Uniformly great acting can be seen, personally didn't have a problem with Michelle Rodriguez. For her, compared to other roles of hers, Ana Lucia is one of her better roles.

In summation, outstanding episode. 10/10 Bethany Cox
