Journey's End (1930)

Is there even a war on?! You sure can't tell through most of this movie!

"Journey's End" is a very strange movie. While it's one of the first British talking pictures, its depiction of WWI seems weird....almost non-existent! So, instead of seeing and hearing folks battling, mostly the soldiers just sit around talking and talking and talking....like they are guests on a talk show! In fact, war seems almost fun....with the men chatting and all the camaraderie! I'm actually surprised, as this came out only a few years after the war....and you'd think the veterans would have been irritated by its odd depiction.

Captain Stanhope (Colin Clive) is in charge of a unit in WWI. However, to cope with the pressure of the war, he's a drunk and afraid. So, when his sweetie's brother is assigned to the unit, the Captain is scared that his inadequacy will be revealed.

The problem with this movie is that the men stayed in the trenches and talked and talked and talked. The action was sadly missing--perhaps because the Brits didn't have much in the way of sound movie equipment. Regardless, the film is a great idea....but the execution really ruins it.
