I don't think I've ever seen such an inconsistent show, I don't mean in it's plot I simply mean it's quality. My rating per episode fluctuated to crazy degrees and the average is a very underwhelming just above average overall
Full Metal Alchemist is one of the premier anime series, hugely popular and I've heard no real criticism of. Sadly, I have plenty.
It tells the story of the Elric brothers, two young boys who tragically lose their mother and attempt to use the art of alchemy to bring her back but with unfortunate consequences.
It's scored well, the animation is great, the voice acting is flawless and it's full of genuinely interesting engaging characters who over the course of the 51 episode single series I came to care for.
So why such a low rating?
For start I hate the overexaggerated reactions, I don't mean how anime characters insist on shouting all the time I mean when they constantly break from serious animation to show a silly overdrawn facial expressions complete with symbols around their head. I really hate that nonsense!
Next the plot as it develops begins to get a bit far fetched, yes I know we're talking about a world of alchemy but I mean the character additions, character behaviour and generally how an interesting plot gets convoluted to an extent it simply didn't need to.
I like Full Metal Alchemist, I'm certainly glad I watched it. It has some fantastic qualities but it as a package deal is badly flawed and leads to a finale that left me scratching my head. Not because I didn't understand it, more that I couldn't believe 51 episodes has led to that and how ultimately it was a combination of moronic and mind numbingly stupid.
Regardless I would recommend FMA, I just hope the sequel feature movie fills in the blanks that by all rights the show should have. And after that onto Brotherhood which I'm told is superior.

Several powerful moments
The Bad:
Silly expressions
Lack of consistency
Dumb finale

Edward might possibly be self concious about his height
At no point did Edward during their long walks think it a good idea to get into Al (Then again when you put it like that...)
I spent the entire show trying to work out if Envy was male or female
Anyone who wants you to call them "Führer" is probably up to no good
