A wonderful underrated comedy!
16 September 2018
This is one of my favorite comedies of all time. I remember watching it a lot on TV, and never got tired of it. I've always liked Jason Biggs, Steve Zahn and specially Jack Black, so to have a comedy where they team up, to me it was nothing short of awesome! So Darren (Biggs), Wayne (Zahn) and JD (Black) have been friends since they were in school, they have a Neil Diamond cover band together, they share an enthusiastic fanaticism over Diamond himself and his music. Darren one day finds himself wondering if he'll ever find love, and thinks about the one girl that could have been but never was, Sandy (Amanda Detmer). Wayne and JD then encourage him to find someone; they see an attractive woman (Amanda Peet) entering the bar they were in, so Wayne arranges for Darren to approach her. Long story short, Darren and Judith end up together, but she just uses him, toys with him and Darren just consents and even justifies every discourteous action she pulls on him. She makes him give up the Neil Diamond cover band, even burns his records, and forbids him to hang out with Wayne and JD. What a harpy, right? Well, after coming up with different unsuccessful options, they decide to kidnap Judith and make it look like she left Darren, and later died; so Darren could pursue a different relationship without any guilt. Wayne orchestrates everything so Darren and Sandy who just moved back to town can be together.

In my opinion, from the minute Wayne and JD start trying out things in order to get Judith to dump Darren the movie gets hilarious and ludicrous. My favorite scenes are the one where Judith psychoanalyzes JD and makes him realize he is gay, and when he reveals this fact to Wayne so casually. Every scene where their old coach (the great R. Lee Ermey) appears is pure comedy gold. Seriously the man just steals every scene he's in. Jack Black and Steve Zahn's chemistry is another reason why this movie is so funny. They made the script work through their comedic timing and overall delivery of their lines. Jason Biggs is great as the timid, nice and somewhat emasculated lead; he really knows how to pull this kind of characters off. Amanda Peet also did a terrific job as the controlling and manipulating femme that steals Darren's kind heart.

There are tons of funny scenes in this movie; I just couldn't understand why somebody wouldn't laugh at this great fun film. If you want something similar to this, I suggest you Tomcats which also came out in 2001. There's something special about comedies made in the 00s; I'm probably biased because of nostalgia factor, I don't know. But I know that you will have a lot of fun with Saving Silverman, I guarantee!
