More than just another food show
13 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I can honestly say that this is my favourite food-related show, maybe even my favourite show ever! I just finished the show (within a single day might I add) and not a single moment of it was a waste. There are 9 episodes each about 30 mins in length and I am not ashamed to say I cried 9 times within the last day.

This show takes you to 9 different Asian countries each with their own unique traditional and modern street foods. Some of these foods are things we are familiar with, like pho, takoyaki, lumpia, and wonton with noodles. Others are more experimental, for example: Raan Jay Fai's (one of the featured chefs) dry tom yum, Arya's Snack and Foods' colourful Jajan Pasar, to Jo Junja's Baked Baffle. The foods are all shot beautifully and we are given a brief background of all featured traditional foods by people who understand the culture, the history, and the significance. Each episode also features a single chef who is known for creating something unique or just making something people know and love very well and makes them real. No longer are they just the background to some good food, "Street food" shows us that they're more than that. They are mothers and fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers, they are people who carry on a family legacy and keep a tradition alive.

If you're looking for another generic "white man goes around asian countries eating cheap foods" this is not the show for you. However, if you're looking for something deeper, kinder, and very moving, I would highly recommend you check this out.
