Rock the Block brings four Interior Designers together to customize a family-style home in a cookie-cutter neighborhood (Santa Clarita, CA). Allison Victoria (Windy City Flip), Jasmine Roth (Hidden Potential), Leanne Fords (Restored by the Fords), and Mina Starsiak Hawk (Good Bones) are all HGTV alums. The goal is to add value to each home and the person with the highest appraisal wins. Jasmine and Mina's design styles suit this show very well because their own shows focus on flipping houses in suburban neighborhoods. Allison's style is very sophisticated with vintage and modern elements. Leanne's design style is clean (white on white) minimalist with showstopper features. I truly love and appreciate each design style. That being said, I do not think every designer researched Santa Clarita, CA. This town is the definition of suburbia and sits about an hour and half from Los Angeles. In the 3 episodes that have aired, here's my takeaway. I feel like Mina is playing it safe. I know she's taking the buyer (a family) into consideration, but her design style isn't really standing out from the other designers. Leanne, on the other hand, is designing for one particular buyer and unfortunately, her design is more Palm Springs than Santa Clarita. Allison, as the saying goes "You can take the girl out of the 'city', but you can't take the 'city' out of the girl". Jasmine is from SoCal, so she may have the upper hand in knowing what buyers are looking for in a home. All the women have fantastic design styles and I cannot wait to see who wins.
