A Blast From The Past...

Hard to believe this was only made in 1963. It would probably bomb today. The values seem so politically incorrect as to make you wonder if it is a spoof. The story surrounds John Wayne, the mega wealthy rancher living the boozy bachelor life until his fiery wife, Maureen O'Hara, returns to the fold.... And all the ensuing shenanigans that follow. But.... would the casual violence against women and the casual prejudice against the native Americans play well with 21st century sensibilities? It just seems so dated. Stagecoach, made 30 years earlier featuring a very boyish John Wayne, was a far more creative and stimulating effort. Probably owing to John Ford's direction. That other gem featuring these stars, The Quiet Man, itself following a very similar plot, was a far more rounded and less cringe worthy offering. Worth watching as a history lesson in how film Westerns were once made...
