Review of Burglar

Burglar (1987)
2/10
Could it be I've seen far too many comedies or is this really just not funny?

It's obviously not Whoopi Goldberg's fault that this comedy action thriller is the Edsel of the 80's, coming off her first two films, a classic drama and a very funny comedy with the third film not at all the charm. She gets to sink her teeth into the sketch and character comedy she did on stage before becoming Miss Celie so she really scores on that level, being genuinely funny in her various disguises, but that's where the laughs end. It's a rather tasteless story about a professional burglar being blackmailed to continue burgling and after getting a bit turned on by the sounds of people making love while she hides, she gets to witness a murder.

Okay, so Whoopi's funny, but is her character really sympathetic? Not really, unfortunately. Then there's Bobcat Goldthwaite, difficult to tolerate as a yelling standup comic, but as Whoopi's codependent best friend, the urge to hit fast forward doubles. The recurring sound of dentist Lesley Ann Warren's dental drill really grates after a while. The sound of drilling continues throughout even with other instruments and objects being drilled.

With the law enforcement on her trail (lead by plain clothes detectives John Goodman and Anne DeSalvo), this is a cat and mouse chase that makes the police complete klutzes and fools. With few genuine laughs and a few questionable judgments of the writer's humor, this just manages to get out a few laughs and usually uncomfortable ones. As big a Whoopi fan I am, this is not one of her films I could see watching again or recommending. Keep your finger near the fast-forward button. Bobcat's screen time is well worth skipping over to prevent headaches from the temple.
