I don't know for sure, but this is hands down the best work of Yoshiyuki Tomino ever and the best mecha series I've ever seen, even with the useless recap episode (22, just skip it). Taking from the roots of Gundam and mixing personal reflections about the nature of humanity and its links with the world sorrounding us, psychedelia and space opera in equal parts, this anime is a joy to watch from start to the end. Incredibly enough, on the later episodes it even manages to deconstruct the usual Japanese machism/mysoginy by showing that men have emotions and can cry like all people. It also clearly influenced Neon Genesis Evangelion in a lot of respects, for those who are fans of that series. I can't wait to see where the final full-time OAV will go...
