Screwballs (1983)

A Substandard "Porky's" Clone
2 April 2021
This film essentially begins with several teenage boys all trying to be the first to gaze upon the breasts of one particular high school student by the name of "Purity Busch" (Linda Speciale). Unfortunately, when all of their individual ideas backfire they then decide to work together to expose her cleavage for all the world to see. What they don't count on is just how difficult this will turn out to be as Purity has the full support of the school faculty behind her. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say this was a rather typical coming-of-age high school comedy produced during this particular time period. To that effect, it uses the same clichéd formula and includes the usual stereotypical characters by incorporating a fat slob "Melvin Jerkovski" (played by Jason Warren), a nerd named "Howie Bates" (Alan Deveau) a rich kid by the name of "Brent Van Dusen III" (Ken Deuters) along with a couple of other losers thrown in as well. Again, nothing out-of-the-ordinary. Throw in some sophomoric humor and a paper-thin plot and that pretty much sums up the basic premise of this film in a nutshell. Admittedly, it was somewhat commercially successful and there were a couple of attractive actresses like Linda Shayne (as "Bootsie Goodhead") and the aforementioned Linda Speciale to brighten the scenery. Be that as it may, however, it never amounts to more than a substandard "Porky's" clone and I have rated it accordingly.
