John Adams (2008)

It provides an engrossing impression of the man and the times

This series is more compelling as a piece of cinema than a tightly constructed piece of dramatized history. The historical material is treated quite rough-several major events of the series did not happen, could not happen or the meaning was greatly altered. The series makes liberal inference around limited facts known-especially around Charles Adams. Instead the series is among the best I have seen at providing a flawed, human, complex and realpolitik take on this period of history. Hooper is not an American and the series benefits enormously from his outsider perspective laying bare contradictions in the American psyche. Hooper is gifted director-Cats aside!-at presenting a realistic, naturalistic drama with anti-classical framing, compositions. There is a ton of odd choices in the set-ups, editing rhythm, blocking etc. In a consistent style that you stop noticing but also de-mythologizes the Founders. The series is at its best when it is provide a general impression of the period's complexity.

All aspects of the production are top notch, from the wonderful cast to the production values. I know some people struggle with Giamatti but I find him wonderful in this role. Adams was a complex guy and the film captures that complexity even when the details are off. This is a wonderful series.
