. . . recovered from a hot air balloon mishap which occurred a good 15 years before the Golden Age of Movie Serials began. Flash Gordon, Tarzan, Mandrake and all of those John Wayne heroes do not make so much as cameo appearances during THE PERILS OF PAULINE. No one would dare to bill a flick about the Hindenburg as a recounting of the Space Age, but PAULINE tries to present itself as THE RISE AND FALL OF THE MOVIE THEATER SERIALS. Its initial scroll harkens back 30 years, but serials were playing regularly at all of America's big screen venues within 30 months of PAULINE's release. When you get right down to brass tax, PAULINE may have been a flash-in-the-pan, but she certainly was NOT a Flash Gordon.
