The Abyss (1989)
9/10
An absolute masterpiece, deep and meaningful!

32 years later and still this movie never gets old. An absolute gem of a movie that belongs in the cult classic pile of masterpiece film making.

I can not understand why people have a hard time understanding the basis and purpose of this film.

A message to the below user review of davyd.

Why did the aliens kill all humans on the sub? Because they were going to contribute to the deaths of hundreds if not thousands of people!

Why did we not see many aliens? Because this movie wasn't just about alien life, it's a political message that is delivered subtly to the viewers to make us aware of what we are doing to the world, if you want aliens go watch aliens, if you want something deep and meaningful then the abyss is it!

Like J. Robert Oppenheimer said, I have become death, the destroyer of worlds and this movie is about the struggle to come to terms with this by showing the human interaction with one another from war loving soldiers to innocent civilians whom all onboard the vessel have been caught up in a web of lies and have become scapegoats to continue killing.

To quote a line from the movie " We all see what we want to see... Coffey looks and he sees Russians, he sees hate and fear. Bud, you have to look with better eyes than that.

This is not just a movie about alien life or mindless action, you have to look with better eyes than that to see the big picture and the message which is portrayed and a message that will stand the test of time even in a hundred years time, even if we ever at one point experience world peace.

We have become death and we are the destroyer of worlds!
