There are a few of these symbols of the inability to complete a task, to finish what one started. The good doctor is not only sexually impotent, he is incapable of embracing life and taking that treasure. I'm sure the sentence given him would be devastating to a young man, but he has a wife who is really willing to live with this. He thinks that giving her permission to sleep around is a gift to her. It is so condescending and pathetic. Well crafted and very sad at times.
