Season One Review

Netflix's "Sweet Tooth" showed up on my radar as it was an adaptation of a DC comic, but it's pretty far from any world of Superheroes and is enormously prescient showing up as it did in the time of covid.

A virus has killed a large amount of the human race. Though the origin of this apocalyptic threat is unknown, it's arrival coincided with the beginning of children being born as hybrids, merging aspects of various animals, with their human forms. When his father dies, Gus (Christian Convery) a human/deer hybrid leaves his home in an attempt to find his mother. He is joined on his quest by Tommy (Nonso Anozie). Elsewhere a doctor, Aditya Singh (Adeel Aktar) tries to find a cure for his wife Rani (Aliza Vellani) but baulks at the lengths he'll have to go to, to continue his research.

How did I feel about this season of "Sweet Tooth"? Ultimately, that it was alright but I'm not really sure who it was for? You might think, considering that the star is not yet a teenager and the plethora of cute animal hybrids exist in the story, that it's for children - but there are a lot of dark moments and themes, involving death, violence and vivisection. It's be intersesting to see if the show reshot anything in light of the real pandemic, as there are some scenes, particularly one in the last episode which Rhys Darby appears in that could be taken as straight commentary on how some countries have dealt with the virus.

Visually the post-apocalyptic world is interesting, but some of the visual effects are a little ropey. Though Gus himself is fine, the rest of the hybrids vary from full CGI creations, to kids in costume and are, pretty uniformly, rubbish. Performances are good across the board though, with a short but memorable turn from Will Forte and a B Story with Dania Ramirez running a hybrid protection base. Neil Sandilands main villain, General Abbot feels like he's from another show altogether, but is a welcome presence when he appears.

I could have done with the story perhaps being a little slower, with a few more adventures as "Sweet Tooth" and "Big Man" bond on their travels. I could also have done with a clearer understanding of exactly how the virus works, and what relationship it has to the hybrids.

I don't think that the show (so far) deserves to be in any discussion about the best TV, even of just the year but it was enough that I'd come back for a second season, if one was forthcoming.
