6/10
A safe movie for a franchise that excels when being bold.

Warning: Spoilers
It is a competent action/adventure show but it lacks the depth and nuance of exceptional star trek. The music score and visual effects are the best parts of this movie and I was 'moved' by the score during the first contact scene with the Vulcans.

The main problem of this movie is the massive plot holes that require me to murder my suspension of disbelief and bury it and then grieve for it in order to accept this bizarre premise.

What works:
  • Cochrane (Aka Roddenberry) is great and well performed.

  • Visual effects are great and the borg are threatening.

  • The musical score is great.

What doesn't work:
  • The borg queen and the idea of the borg collective needing a willing human partner. The borg have assimilated thousands of species but humanity is somehow special?!

  • The time travel stuff ------ This has been stated before but why wouldn't the borg just time travel in another part of the galaxy and then assimilate earth? This ability to time travel ruins everything because wouldn't any borg cube be able to do this even if this cube fails?! There should have been some space magic explanation for this time travel.

  • Picard is out of character ----- In the tv show he has dealt with his assimilation but in order to create drama the writers shoehorn this revenge plot element in.

I really enjoyed this movie when I watched it in the theatres when I was sixteen. I am mostly bored by the actions elements as an old man now. Action star trek tends to provide diminishing returns upon subsequent viewings and this movie falls into that category for me.
