Mamma Roma (1962)
3/10
Weak story; poor performances.

Magnani's performance isn't the problem, but she was 53/54 when filming this and looked it. Ettore says he thinks she's 43 at one point...yeah, right.

The Fascists made her marry an old man in 1922?

Luisa Loiano, who plays Biancofiore, tells her she looks awful later in the movie, but she clearly looks exactly the same. It's just stupid and unnecessary dialogue.

Poor writing and/or casting.

Back to Ettore; his acting is so terrible that it is distracting. He basically ruins the movie. He is not convincing at all, even when just sitting quietly or standing. He still looks like he's "acting"!

It may not be totally his fault, because the dialogue is pathetic for all of the characters, kind of like Magnani's wig!

Speaking of fake, the scene where they set up the restaurant owner is just awful, including direction. It looked like a high school play, including the guy being set up. If it was just the others, I could understand, but it was a disaster.

Not too good.
